Checked out the building forum but can't find an answer so .When I finally got back on tonight after stop start and messing about,I uploaded a simple sculpty star.Rezzed it ,copied it and textured it ,job done.I walked away, looked back to admire my work and the star had gone misshapen.I know this can happen to sculpties but I was only 10 ish meters away.I have freebie sculpty rocks that do not behave that way.I am not a sculpty lover or an expert.Did I do something wrong? Is there a setting to improve the look.I used an open source program.Maybe sculpties come in different qualities. Can anyone advise please.

Did it go back to normal when you got closer? If so, you've simply run afoul of LOD. It doesn't just eat regular prims, it makes sculpties look bad too. There are ways to optimize a sculpt and protect it from some of this, but mostly it's just SL. I'm not sure on how to help though. You might try using a higher density mesh (more polygons)

Basically, LL decided to set the value for renderVolumeLODFactor waaaaay too low, go into Debug Settings and set it to 5.0, then all sculpties will look better :)

I really should open up a JIRA about that someday.

Good grief! What an improvement it now seems stable.Wow.Thank you so much, maybe that's why I never felt happy with sculpties. You are right, this should be common knowledge.Once again cheers

Just be aware that since it's NOT common knowledge, other people will see your star just as messed up as you did before you changed the setting. If you don't mind that, fine, but if you're concerned about how your stuff looks to others, you'll have to "LOD-proof" the sculpty itself, not just mask the problem by adjusting your viewer.

That said, Arcane is absolutely right. The default setting is absurdly low. You can thank a few loudmouthed sculpty abusers for that. It used to be higher, but all it took was for a few people to do some harebrained things like building a giant multi-million-polygon tree out of hundreds of little pillow-shaped sculpties, and then blaming the system when everyone's FPS in a 2-sim radius dropped to single digits. LL chose to responded to such reportings of "sculpty lag" by nurfing render settings, rather than by taking steps to educate the public on why and how to build more responsibly.

Yes I figured that.Had a quick look in the wiki but could not find anything on LOD-proofing.So I will have to adopt the "out of sight out of mind"approach for the time being.I could always put up a sign clueing my punters in,for a small fee of course. LOL

Also, be aware that you will need to change this every once in a while since the viewer likes to "fix" it for us by setting it back to the default at random logins.

Blot,
Check out the following tutorial which goes into some detail about LOD. It may help your understanding.
http://blog.machinimatrix.org/2008/06/04/precision_sculpties_lod/#more-14

There are also a few threads in the Building Forum which have reference to the issue and in particular Domino Marama may offer some insight - he's helped me tons in understanding sculpties.
Good luck.

You could also vote for https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-9384 where we are trying to convince Qarl Linden to make changes that will make controlling LOD much more effective on oblong sculpties.
