Disappearing sound in SL? GRRR!

For a while now I've had a problem with SL and only sl making a sound that cracks and pops and plays stuff sped up and then kills the sound for SL for whatever amount of time, then comes back, quickly playing every sound it missed while it was "frozen."

This happens with no other program and sometimes i can still get sound from Winamp and other programs.

I have a sound blaster x-fi xtreme gamer sound card and since this never happens when SL isn't running and I do run other games/3d things without the problem I'm wondering if there is some setting to fix it in SL. Right now it won't come back. I will likely have to reboot to get sound in SL again.

What version of SL, which is shown in the Help / About Second Life window?

What operating system?

Did Windows by any chance do an automatic update of the sound card driver, or did you let Windows Update update the sound card driver yourself?

If so you might try reverting to the older driver.

Also, you might try updating the sound card driver if possible.

Also you might try a different version of SL.

I have a Xi-Fi too and had the same issue and, after googling extensively, it became obvious the issue was with the card not SL. I'm afraid it was a while ago so can't remember what I happened to do to fix it but you could try searching online, it's a rather common problem with these cards it seems.

Try searching crackle pop xi-fi, you'll see what I mean...

It does happen on all versions of SL i've tried including a 3rd party viewer and beta.
and thank you for giving me an idea for search terms... though i really crave rice krispies now.
