speed of skin rezzing when changing skins?

:o I've wondered about this for a long time- What controls the speed that a new skin will rez when I change skins?

it seems like the skin comes into focus (at least the face) within a few (2-4) seconds, stays infocus for a few seconds and then goes out of focus for several seconds (6-12) and back in to "stay".

What controls this process? is there some change I can make to speed things up, especially when I am trying on a lot of demo skins?

At a wild guess i would say it's to do with the textures that make up the skin.

The face is a seperate texture from the body, so that explains why they load independenty. The bit depth of the texture also affects it ( I think )

The only way to speed it up is to grab a bunch of demo skins you like to try and head off to an empty sim - ie one not loaded up with prim junk or avies then you should get a faster response.

Added: The going into and out of focus is to do with rebaking the texture onto your shape afaik but i'm no skinmaker so it's all just conjecture

I have noticed this too, ever since starting SL, any skin I put on, be it one I made, or one I bought or a freebie, all seem to rez as you described

even when I change clothes I find the skin ends up going through the rez cycle...

would be interesting to know what or why

For me it's any clothing period.. (Non prim only)

If I put something on, it rezzes, then.. unrezzes, then rezzes, then sometimes can't decide for a bit until it finally settles.

I'm so used to it that I normally just spam rebake a lot when it happens .__.

Interesting question and I've always wanted to know the answer as well. Any smart people out there that can tell us why?

it goes something like this:

1. you choose a skin and wear it, those three textures are downloaded to your computer.

2. any other clothing textures you're wearing at the time are stacked on top of that and smooshed into the baked textures.

3. The baked textures are displayed for you (kind of need this for editing appearance), and meanwhile they are uploaded back to the sim so that everyone else can see.

4. The sim receives the updated textures from you, and sends them back out to everyone who can see you. This seems to be where the "melting" comes in. It's weird to download the thing when your viewer just created it locally, but I suppose it's nice confirmation that it all worked.

Huh. My mind just boggled at the thought of all the programming that must entail. This is why Lindens get paid the big bucks. :) Thanks Viktoria that made total sense.

I don't understand it, but Nicholaz had fixed that in his viewer, so that re-blurring doesn't happen.

To speed it up, if you go into appearance, the clear one usually instantly appears! (One of the first SL tricks I learned my first week or two, LOL)

Thanks for all the comments and ideas. Doing it in appearence makes some sense, but does'nt my avi go out of appearence mode when I put on the skin?
