Radeon Buying Advice

Never having used anything but Nvidia graphics cards, I'm now tempted by the performance-to-price price that the HD 3850 and HD 3870 are getting remarked on, in comparison to Nvidia's 8xxx series. I've heard, however, that ATI cards have had various difficulties with SL. Is this true?

Does anyone use either the above named cards for Second Life? I'd love to hear how they're performing on the grid. Also, does anyone know if there would be much of a difference in performance on SL between the 3850 and the 3870 (particularly 256mb RAM extra that the latter has)?

I am not an overclocker or anything of that sort, so overclocking potential doesn't really matter to me, and I'm not much of a gamer, so I definitely don't need something on the high end. Excellent performance in SL at a good price, with some room to play the very occasional future DX10 releases with decent results, would be just fine.

Thanks for the help. :)

maybe this statement applies to the 3850 & 3870 ... but ... i'm running a radeon x1650 pro with 512mb. i've never had any problems. i had a x1300 with 256mb before that. no problems with it either.

Ditto, no issues with ATI here

used 2 different ati cards and never had any difficulties, only changed to nvidia cause in need of a better card and nvidia was best price/performance in stock at that moment

who ever thinks that 1 or the other is better is wrong, just double check with the system requirements and the tech forum to see if the card u want to buy is supported and no one has reported any major problems with it and your good to go :)

My x300 (Yes, it's OLD.. After Christmas, I'm saving up for a new one!) isn't having any problems in SL that can't be attributed to the fact that it's OLD. At least not like crashing.. well, non-driver related crashing anyways.

I'm using a Radeon 9550 (old and cheap) with no problems.

However, there were a lot of reports of problems with Radeon graphics in laptops, and/or with Vista.

Video problems are often specific to the particular model card, operating systen, and driver version. So generalizations, including mine, should be taken with a grain of salt.

I have one of each. They are about the same. Both companies have had Vista driver issues, that are becoming worked out.

ATI support is a little better and they have been more open about issues while Nvidia tends to hide from users, when there are issues, but, also there have been more Nividia updates and there is a slighly better performance from Nvidia, but ATI control panel software has had less bugs.

It's kind of a trade off and a flip of the coin for the average system. For SLI, Nvidia is the way to go.
