I have a friend that has not logged in for a while. Last night, I tried to do a search on him while in-game. Search response was "not found". How can a toon be not found? Can we delete old avis, or when we cancel our premium accounts (or forget to pay them) the avi dissapear? Curious mind wants to know...  |

If, from their account page, they chose to delete the account, yes, they could. I have friends that have done this.

The owner of any account can tell LL to delete the account. LL takes their own sweet time about doing so, and gives you a while to reconsider, during whiuch time they could reactivate it. But eventually they follow through on delete requests.
Delenquent Premium accounts, which fail to pay their membership fees or other financial obligations, LL will suspend and eventually delete as well.
Since Basic-level accounts don't have ongoing financial obligations to LL, an unused Basic account can remain active forever, even if the owner died in RL and could never log in again.
