Land owned vs land needed...How?

I want to open a shop and I found a business in a box that includes a store, but, as a newer In-World Resident, how can I place a shop at 530 prims. Doesn't that exceed the area land I am allowed to own (At 512 kb for my premium account)...I have a home site, but, my SL web site profile (Land store) shows LAND OWNED: 512 kb, LAND ALLOWED: 512 kb, available for purchase: 0

How do I manage that?

And, likewise, how is it that some of shops the size fo department stores...I understand I'd really be renting server space, but, how do people get past the same limit I see relative to me where they get rights to build a mega store on a huge piece of property...Do you have to be here, In-World, a long time to build up rights to more space? Or, can I purchase a bigger chunk to get on with it?

You are allowed to own more land than 512 m. You can own as much as you can afford. All the 512 is, is you can own this small amount of land on the Mainland without having to pay any monthly tiers fees to the Lindens. But if you own more than 512 m or own on a private island you will need to pay a tier fee.

Also you don't need to be a premium member to own land on a private island. Don't make the mistake I made thinking you needed to be a premium member to own land. You just need to be a premie if you want to own land on the Mainland.

Finally figure out how much you would want to afford for the initial land purchase. But more importantly figure out how much you can afford in monthly tiers and how many prims does that land parcel give you in relation to your tier payment.

Research, research, research.

I own a nice small parcel of of land (4096 m) on a private island. But in all honesty, I wish I had done more research before I bought. Oh well, live and learn.

You can also rent land on both the mainland and private islands. You will need at least a 3072 m2 lot for a 530 prim store. Renting land means you pay a rental fee to the owner and not to Linden labs.

The "land allowed" and "available for purchase" numbers should both include the phrase "at your current level of tier". You can buy as much land as you can afford, but the next time you buy any on the mainland your tier fees will increase.

Also, be aware that with a Business-In-A-Box, you just bought a big box of free stuff. You are now going to try to sell free stuff to other people that don't realize they are buying free stuff. BIAB stuff might come in handy if you are looking for examples to learn how to make your own stuff. I've paid a small amount for BIAB things when I didn't feel like looking for the free one. In general, BIAB stores are unpopular, extremely unpopular with people that know better, and very shortlived.

I hope you use the store setup just as a starting template to learn how to make something better. Good Luck!

Thanks, that answers quite a bit...I admit I have already been cruising 4096 parcels and came close at one point to grabbing one, but, didn't know if I could yet so I hesitated to click it and do the L$ transfer. I can also deal with tiers as long as the goods in the shop overcome them, but, that's the name of the BIZ game Out_World as well, yeah? Adjust the non-selling inventory out and replace with items that pull the customers in...I'm game to try! Appreciate it, see ya In-World, cheers!

Since you mentioned it:

Don't buy your lindens from the Buy Land window or any in-game window. Go to the Lindex on the website and enable the option that allows you to see limit orders and not just market orders. If you place your buy order just above what the current best rate is, your order will be the next one that gets filled. You'll get a more $L for your $US, and when you start buying land, the numbers can add up pretty quick.

I agree...I have seen that myself where I saw a free item in a shop and later saw the exact same item for $L 20...No, not my style...I want to buy the concept, which the seller has with full rights and evolve the item to my take on what it should be with some changes and scripting added...Embellish on the basic package really...Thanks for the input!

You are WAY ahead of 99% of people that buy into those BIABs then. Good Luck and have fun with it. Since I started my place in SL, I think everyone has made money off it except me, but I'm enjoying it.

You can own more than the 512 square meters that your premium account allows but it costs an extra Tier Fee each month.

See here for the costs, they can get expensive:
http://secondlife.com/whatis/landpricing.php

Be aware that businesses in boxes products for sale are mostly junk and freebies and I seriously doubt you would be able to cover your land fees from it.
Its far better to make your own products for sale.

you could also build your own shop to conserve prims or use a nice prefab one.
There is a link somewhere that tells you how many prims land of each size can support, but I dont know where the link is.

Remember the 512 of land from your premium account and tier fees must be on the mainland. (With land on private islands you arrange a private agreement with the island owner of how to pay them for tier)

Yeah, I second that. 530 prims for a BIAB is pretty insane, unless there's like 500 boxes of stuff being sold (in which case one of the opensource vendors might be worth a look). And the economics won't be pretty; there's a lot of competition because of the low barrier to entry for such an undertaking, not to mention Yadni's and the other *free* "freebie stores." But then, as an exercise in developing one's in-world marketing acumen, maybe competition is a good thing: if one can sell this stuff, imagine how easy it will be to sell original content!

Renting may often have cheaper tiers, but beware those people who expect a large 'purchase price' up front too.

Stick to reputable renters - many people have suddenly had their rented land taken away from them with no refund of that (often very significant) 'purchase' price.

Owning your own land does mean you have control over it.

Watch out for covenant conditions that dictate the type of use of the land. If you are going to rent on an island, you may find that the owner of the island doesn't allow commercial ventures on the land. Most Islands are commercial OR residential and never the twain shall meet

good luck
