The top two threads at the moment are "Has the SL Population Declined?" and "Record Concurrency the weekend?".

A somewhat contradictory looking juxtaposition.

The term "residents" is a misnomer. That number includes bots, and if you see some other active threads, one person could be responsible for as few as a couple avatars or 50 at one time, all online at the same time.

Without doubt many are bots and alts, and it might well be that there are several thousand of those. But it is still a huge concurrency of avatars, I can remember when a concurrency of 15,000 would cripple the Grid.

If they are alts how does that effect the "concurrency" figure? I know its possible to run more than one SL client at the same time, but my assumption has always been that one doesn't use generally use alts at the same time.

I know there are a ton of bots running around waiting to scoop up land from frustrated owners looking for an out and for camping, but I don't think there are anywhere close to 30,000 of them--perhaps you were joking though. :)

58,300 at the time of this writing btw.

with the amount of campers across the grid, bots running around the grid indexing every damn prim(there are more then u think, alot more) and the alts, it wasn`t a joke :)

Just have to explore. Go anywhere there are large numbers of green dots and see what is up. Most are campers or bots (alts) not doing anything other than collecting traffic numbers.

There are sims with large numbers of people actually doing something however but severely out numbered by the others.

Even still what is sad is 57K online is less than 1% of the total population of SL. LL needs to take more steps to keep "real" people coming back. 57K out of 10million+? hummm.

That is 57K on at one moment out of 10 million total residents that potentially can log back in at any time. You have those that forget the pw or just dont want to use the old alts, etc. There was a time when SL reset everyones password and required verifiable information to gain access to the account again. The total residents are the total accounts set up since day 1.

Yes I am aware of that. I started SL in November 2005. At the time you had to have a CC to register and only allowed 5 alts at $10 per alt. The CC is still a good idea. Not so much for age verification but for some liability of the user. If their CC is on file they have some way to identify you if you screw up bad enough.

As for active users I would say anything past 60days is not worth considering active. That is 1,495,561 out of 11,211,254. Just over 10%? How many of those are traffic bots? ;)

Just pulled from the main site:

Population

Residents Logged-In During Last 7 Days 445,542

Residents Logged-In During Last 14 Days 632,896

Residents Logged-In During Last 30 Days 1,011,716

Residents Logged-In During Last 60 Days 1,495,561

Total Residents 11,211,254

There are a record number online because let's face it - bots are avatars too, and bot sweethearts need their christmas presents, and of course shopping...

So far as using alts at the same time goes...

Using the regular viewer, one can run multiple accounts on a moderate computer, working them manually by alt tabbing or otherwise switching between SL instances in a normal way., but it uses lots of resources, and gets bogged down before you get many alts going at once.

Using viewers that don't have a display, generally (probably nearly always) using programs that make use of the libsecondlife library, one can run a lot of accounts at once.
I've heard reports of over 50 accounts being operated on one machine at one time. I don't recall seeing reports of a hundred accounts running on one machine at a time. I may have seen a report of 75 or so accounts running on one machine at a time, I'm not sure.

Given how cheap computers are, and how little resources it takes to run non-graphics SL clients, it woudn't be impractical for one person to run many hundreds of accounts, or even thousands, I suppose, assuming they had some reason to do so.

For "normal" use of alts, with normal SL viewers, one might have one on a pose stand while you make a copy of out of prims, or use it to test permissions settings, or other stuff like that. One could also use multiple alts to play multiple parts in plays, or run con operations, or to mess with people's heads in chat.

There used to be a person that had two accounts, one of which followed the other around, running the master account's animation, always a bit behind. This was hi-tech back then, probably near magic looking to someone that new that Avatars were run by humans, and didn't know anything about LSL.
