What is that flying mess?

A few times while flying and looking at abandoned parcels near me I've flown into a mess. What it seems to be is a lot of (hundreds?) particles that are weird pictures, just coming at you like a blizzard.

The pictures have included Michael Richards' face, mangled fish and most horribly, what looked to be a dog that had been run over or in a dog fight. It was graphic and very disturbing. In some cases there's weird loud music or screaming.

Last night I tried to figure out what this was, but couldn't find any particle maker. (Hard to find when you're bombarded.) I was wanting to find out who the owner was to see what parcel of land it was on. It looked like it was coming from the abandoned land, but tucked in between some abandoned parcels was a tiny 16m parcel. I know there are ad farms, but this has no ads....it's called Magic Prim Land or something like that, and I've seen these for sale around the area, you buy the tiny piece just for the prims.

What's the purpose of this bombardment system? To keep people off the tiny land? If they're selling the land, wouldn't they *want* people to have a look? And why does LL allow the bombardment to go over into abandoned land like that? It's maddening.

What you ran across is land that the owner or seller forgot to set to auto return object of 1 minute or higher.

If it is set to 0, any griefer who wants, can put ugly stuff on the land like what you saw. It's intended to upset people and scare them away but it is NOT put there by the owner.

This isn't keeping with the topic other than weird neighbor behavior...

I have a new neighbor. LOL. The previous neighbor was okay, kept her land changing and looking like LSD trips in fairyland, but it was always interesting. She put it up for sale for 60,000 L (for just over 2000 sqm), and I sent her a note offering a more reasonable price, but didn't hear back.

So I decided she must have just put it out there for a crazy amount in case someone didn't know any better, or someone in the area just HAD to have it. The guy who bought it has an SL start date from a week ago, but he could have made an alt.

He put one of those ban line "no entry" things around it. Ugh. When I see those, it always makes me think it's the scene of the crime and it's police tape. That's what it looks like.

The depth of my plot is 40 m...would it be wrong to put up a huge megaprim (40 m long and high enough to hide the no entry) with a scene on it? If so, should I make it visible on my side only, or give him a view too? And I'd like to make it non-phantom because he keeps coming over onto my land. (Yeah, sometimes I'm that little male dog with her fire hydrant. I know this.)

Wow, then I've come across a number of folks who have made that mistake. This *is* an area that seems to get griefers. Until I changed my settings, I used to have people leave all kinds of wrecked cars and other trash.

Should I just stay out of others' business, or send an IM to the owner? Since it's just a few parcels away, all of those particles could cause lag, right?

I like you already. Lol.

You can turn off seeing ban lines in your viewer. I forget just how, offhand. I think it's under View or Edit/Preferences somewhere.

Yes, you can rez anything you want on your side of the land. If you wanna be nice, make the side facing from his land into your land, transparent. (right click object/edit/select texture/left click that side of the prim.)

I'm trying to remember who sells these, but some people make privacy screens that are not just a flat picture - they let some of the sky through. For instance, mountains that are just the mountains, not the sky above it also, so it looks like scenery not a 'post card' as someone else in the forum aptly just put it.

But you can also make your own if you get a partly transparent texture and a tall enough megaprim. Those are usually to hide blight, though. I'd just turn off ban lines if that's the only unsightly thing.

It's a bit gutty of them to come onto your land when theirs is for sale at an odd price and empty with a ban line. BTW why *do* people put land for sale then add a ban line? LOL...

Nice posts.

It is your business since it's impacting you is how I see it.

I always send a note card to the owner. They can fix it, or not. Include the sim name and SLurl in the card. (How-to below.) Usually if it's for sale they will fix it quickly, after all it is costing them sales. And you will get a notice if they accept your card, so you can breath easier knowing you did what you could.

You can also AR it to Linden Labs by going to Help/Abuse Report in your Second Life viewer. Object encroachment might be the category but you can read the list and see what fits. If it is Linden land, (it will say owned by Gov. Linden or 'protected land' on it) and it has this problem, then just send an AR about it. In my experience they have been pretty good at cleaning things up and quickly.

The real messes on mainland are those long abandoned parcels or even 'original land' (people used to get 512 land for free in the early days) set to auto return 0. Those attract prim junk like flies to no pest strips.

---

How to include a SLurl: Click Map on your bottom screen in Second Life. The map will open up. Click Copy to Clipboard in the map area. Close the map. Now click in the note card or IM and choose Edit/paste in your Second Life viewer. Voila the location is pasted. Now they just need to copy/paste that address into their chat, click local chat and hit the link. That will take them to the spot you were in before. :)

(You can also include a landmark, if the land will let you take one, or you can get near enough the parcel to do so. Just drag a landmark into a note card, with the details of the problem, and hit 'save.') Make sure to sign your note card also, although the recipient can check Properties in the card to find the sender's name, as well.
