Buying things, no price advertised

Hello,

Is it safe to buy something in a shopping mall when the advertisement gives no price?

Often the only option on right-click is 'pay' ?

How do I know how much I will be paying ?

Thanks as always

Go ahead and click on 'pay' and you will get a box telling you how much you will be paying and you will also have a 'cancel' option.

I really hate things set to sell this way.

If there's no price when you hover over the item then it sounds like it's a vendor. When you click pay the price should come up, you have to click again to actually pay.

I'd say it's the most frightening way to buy anything. You don't get to 'see' the items you're about to buy. You have to take the seller's word for the permissions. The transaction is completely scripted, so if the script fails so does the delivery. And, if it's not set up right, it's up to you to type in the price which just another way to have a ruined transaction. (>_<;)

But... It's a necessary evil. I use my land as a hangout and a store, so I like to keep my place decorated. Because of this, I'm always out of prims so I have to resort to vendors to sell any volume of items. I still put my most popular items in "for sale" boxes to avoid losing sales to vendorphobics. There just ain't much else I can do. (=_=)y

Like Imnotgoing, I use vendors rather than setting prims for sale. So to compromise, I have the price of the style in the vendors description area. In this case, I have Bathing Time for the vendor name and for the description I have, "Victorian Times Gown L$150".

It also whispers the price if you click on the vendor. Tried the floating text, but geeze it annoyed the heck out of me and was pretty just as bad as having no price listed at all for people!

Does anyone make a vendor system that instead of changing the texture, it wold actually res a copy of the box? Something like a hologram vendor -- but the hologram is the flat rectangular box you would normal hang on the wall and set to sell.

This is all very interesting. I never knew there were vendorphobes. I do not have a choice with my pose vendors. I have to use a script so you can choose the animation you want.

The box vendors in my main store also give a rebate to my group members. I can only do that with a scripted vendor.

I will have to give this some more thought.

SMART! XD

I was tempted by the idea of having my for sale stuff rez my glasses in front of the box, but, I found the region I'm in is soooo packed with temp-rezzers already that there are usually no temp prims left. (>_<;)

One reason you don't see the price advertised is that malls often have sales and changing a texture to change a price is a true nightmare and open to mistakes. Displays SHOULD have the perms clearly stated and then we tend to assume the potential buyer has 'Hover Tips' enabled, as the price and description is in the description field, or clicking 'BUY' and seeing the purchase price.
The advantage of this method is that it's all to easy to forget to change the actual price of an item when changing a price sign so using the 'Hover tips' or 'Buy' method is pretty foolproof.

(To pre-empt any replies that say it's easy to change a price then put up a new sign please take into account trying this on 40-50 items, SL lag, slow script response and finding the sign textures in MY inventory :))

Use non-temp prims with a hidden channel command to delete the rezzed item .5 seconds before the new item rezzes. Then script the item to delete the kill script on rez if you are not the owner.

It doesn't matter if you see the item before buying them or not. Many times you see items, specially clothes on ads and they look great. Now once you buy and take them out to see it's a totally different story. So you can't go by ads either.

It's happened way too many times.

The problem is when the item is set to use the Pay function rather than Buy -- the Pay function does not display a price via Hover Tips, so you actually have to click Pay to see what the price is and it sometimes comes up with multiple prices, which of course makes no sense.

ETA: I think that Pay process comes from a script in the object rather than just clicking the box that says it is for sale.

That's even harder... I usually only have up to 10 prims available at a time. My glasses start at 16 prims. (T_T)

I like being able to 'see' the item.. I think Imnot may also mean seeing the Permissions. I label all my stuff with permissions next to the price and on the box. I don't like when "Pay" is used because I can't even see the box it's in. Especially in freebie or cheaper stores.

Really, if the price isn't listed somehow.. Then odds are it changes too much.

Exactly... I've seen some outfits that were like: Pants (No-Transfer), Shirt (No-Transfer), Prim Skirt (No-Mod)(No-Copy)... And that was a total warning flag for me to just walk on by. (=_=)

Also, I've seen a pair of shoes for sale... They looked great, but when I saw the objects for sale, the left shoe was a properly linked shoe, the right was was collected objects... Again, and indicator of quality that I'm not willing to drop monies for. (=_=)

"Pay" Vendors don't offer this visibility. (>_<;)

Sadly, I agree. While I use the pay vendors too, they are more limited than I'd like. I have a sign that covers the perms and prices are in the hovertips. Clothing = mod/copy no trans. Eyes = trans no copy/mod.

And as for the one shoe not being linked? Did you let the vendor know about it? I've had a couple of items come unlinked, due entirely to lag. I checked it twice before picking the item up and it even showed up linked in my inventory. It wasn't linked for the first buyer. I yanked the thing and fast. Now I use an alt to check and occasionally something still goes wrong >.<

Yup, 'Pay' is a scripted function. However, Hover tips show the description field and name field so the price shows in hover text IF it's been put in the description field. All our description fields start with 'For sale: L$XXX' so the price is very apparent to a buyer. Why use pay function? It's because we use a store card system and 'Pay' is a pre-requisite of the script.

I have vendors (that I scripted myself - no I don't sell them) which hold multiple items for sale in a single prim. They use hover text to show the price of the currently displayed item.
After reading this thread though I will be upgrading my script to change the vendor's object and description text too when the item is cycled so that hover tips are useful again.
I never realised that people use the hover tips to see the price, good job on mentioning those Ciaran :)

I swear sometimes they do that so you click pay to see price in hopes for someone with a whole lot lag will forget to hit cancel and pay.
