Are there any shapes that are popular? I'm not asking for your favorite, I'm asking if there are any that are used by a lot of people.

Thanks,
Anya

Hard to say whats popular....there are 100's of shape producers out there, but only a few that are worth their salt IMO. That sector is a little bit different to the SKINS sector...for a good while Minnu skins were flavour of the month....now i hear whispers regarding Redgrave Skins. You don't really get that in the Shapes sector....although many will claim to be the best thing since slice bread if you were to believe some of the Classified ads.

To be honest, I would say the most popular shape in SL is that default shape you entered the game with.............highly modifiied. :)

Anya, one thing to consider when you shape shop. Lots of shape makers make them no mod. They do this to protect someone copying down the slider options and making the shape themself. The bummer for the end user is that if you want to tweak your nose or chin or something to give it your own personal touch you can't. You are stuck having the same shape as everyone else that bought it.

That may not be a big deal to you, but I ran into it when buying shapes before. Just a heads up. :)

I wear the first freebie shape I wore when I came into SL, it was modify so I made my own out of itl. I don't see the sense in buying a shape when it is so easy to mod your appearance yourself

I'm not really shape shopping. I'm wondering if there's a shape or three I should fit when I build stuff. I'm thinking there should be a Ruth setting :-)

Well.. you could ctrl+alt+D to get the advance menu.
Choose Advanced>Character>Character Tests>Test Female. That gives you the basic newbie girl look. As close to Ruth as you can get I guess. :)

That would ruth you but i would suggest you save your current shape so you can recover it easily... otherwise you would start from scratch rebuilding yourself.

True. I had a custom shape on I bought so luckily it had copies in my folder. Now that I tried the Male Basic I am putting one thing on at a time to watch the avatar render score climb. Yeah, I am that bored. :p

I was looking pretty decent with a 1 with my skin, shape and clothes. Then I put the boots on.. still green but hair comes next. That will get me back to normal red. hehe

It's much easier and less violent to just put on the "Female Shape And Outfit Shape" from the Library folder.

Shape is a very personal thing in SL. Most people are trying to define a unique look so everyone is NOT running around with the same shape. Except of course, when you're brand new, in the default shape.

That said... creating your own shape can be tricky.....the sliders take some getting used to and some folks seem to have a better eye for it then others. I make shapes......have a shapes shop in SL. But.....the most important thing for most people (I'm gonna say women more so then men from my expereince) is to have a shape they can adjust themselves and personalize it. So.... you can either give it a go yourself with the sliders....just save your original shape so you can go back to it......and practice...mess with the sliders...see what they all do.
If you decide to buy......just explore different shape shops.... look for stuff that is modifiable and look for demos....it's a lot easier when you can try things before ya buy em (demos will just have giant hands & feet).

If you want help, you can IM me in world...I'd be hapy to help you create a look that suits you (no fee....this is something I truly enjoy doing for people)

If you are talking about clothing then the basic mesh clothing doesn't really matter because it will adjust to the avatar shape that is wearing it. For things like prim skirts, a few of the designers that I buy from will actually include 2 or 3 skirts with the outfits now - small, medium, and large. In my opinion, all prim clothing should be modifiable anyway, so I suppose different sizes just help those that have difficulty editing prim skirts or maybe help a bit because if you pick the right size, you don't have to shrink/expand it quite as much.

If you are talking about items a avatar would use or sit on, I'm not sure how you estimate proper sizing. Ditto for things like lining up pose balls. I used a male alt for initially setting pose ball positions on some stuff, but figured out pretty quick that they still always have to be adjusted for individual avatars.
