Request to debit from object purchased?

Something very strange happened with an object I purchased last night. When I rezzed it in my home, I immediately got an orange drop down menu wanting my permission to debit my account. I did NOT hit the accept button and thankfully all is well and nothing horrible happened. This item was purchased from a reputable seller of furniture. I sent them a notecard right away and I am still waiting to hear from them. I have read about these debit scams, but was under the impression that it usually happens with freebies picked up, not from something you have purchased. Does this mean that someone tampered with their item? A little confused here.

Yes this sounds unusual. Wait until you hear back from the seller. However, some items sold need to take debits, but if it's an innocent piece of furniture i would be wary. Also, when it asks your permission it says the name of the person who will receive payment, if this isn't your name, do NOT accept.

Thanks for the quick response Dekka! It certainly is just an innocent (supposedly) piece of furniture - an end table. Come to think of it, my name WAS in the the box as the person to receive the payments. When it happened, it caught me so off guard that I didn't even find that relevant. I was just freaked out that I got that dreaded orange box. I have made many purchases - picked up many freebies and this was the first time I had encountered this.

The script and the debit permissions were originally for running a store. The name you see in the popup will be the owner of the item. Therefore it will always be you for rezed items.

Vendor boards that use this permission setting do so to refund customers if they pay too little or too much -- among other things --- and they have no way of knowing who will get the money from the debit. So again, the name you see will be the owner of the item.

Maia,
If I were to take a guess, the seller maks a copy of the item for sale and uses a vender script in it that delivers to the buyer an unmodified original version. But somewhere a mistake mistake was made and you recieved a "show room" version of the table instead of the normal one.

If you have modify permissions on the table (doubtful) you can remove the script yourself. I would wait a couple of days for a response from the seller. Also, send them a note card because the IM/email system has not been reliable of late.

And give them a little time. It is the weekend and they may not even be home today.

Thank you Yosef. Yes, I did send the seller a notecard after it happened. Your theory makes sense to me. Probably a mistake on this one table, as I have purchased other items from them and didn't encounter this before.

Permission debit can only be granted by the owner of an object. When the object asks for permission to debit your account, there is no way it can know who will get the money.

I'm not sure where this idea came from, but it will not show anybody's name in that permission box but your own. The object is owned by you and when it asks permission debit it is asking for cart blanche permission to take money from your account at any time thereafter (until the object is deleted or taken back into inventory).

The function of giving money is entirely separate from the act of requesting permission.

llGiveMoney(agent uuid, amount) does not raise the permission debit warning, it just either gives the money or it doesn't, depending on a) if permission debit was granted, and b) if you have the money in your account.

The only way you will know to whom money was given, via llGiveMoney and permission debit, is when you look in your transaction history. Or if you have your browser configured to popup on money transfers, and you are online, you'll get a blue window in the corner of your screen that says 'you paid so-and-so L$amount'.

Summary - the yellow permission debit window will never, ever tell you who money is going to go to. It only asks if an object that you own can take money from your account.
