Information about alts

I'm sure this is in here somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. Where can one find information about alts? Is an alt basically a completely different account? Or is the alt only a different name that can be used? Does the alt have access to the primary's inventory, items and land?

I'm fairly new, and simply can't find this kind of information.

Thanks!

an alt (or alternate) is an entirely seperate account.

The Alt is a totally seperate account. It cannot access any inventory but it's own, Any think you want it to hve you must transfer to it, providing it is transferable.

Actually an ALT can manipulate anothers (alts) items if the original avatar gave modify permissions.

I had fun setting up an alt after learning more of what I really wanted out of SL. But it's so hard to go back to square one after you've been on for a while. It's like "Dang! Transfer funds from my other account quick! Fix my shape quick! Run over here and find a halfway decent freebie skin quick! Gawd - I forgot how goofy the default clothing seems - gotta go buy some clothes quick! Oh, and I need a better walk animation right away." It can be expensive if you're used to a certain level of performance out of your avatar. I advise proceeding with a little more caution than I did.

An alt is simply one or more additional accounts run by the same Real World person, after creation of their first account. As far as SL is coincerned, there is no difference between an alt that you own and an account created by an entirely different person. The fact that you own both accounts gives them no more rights or controls than a stranger's account has.

Yeah, what Weston said.

I started SL and kinda got the feel of the game with my avatar. Eventually, I found the groove I wanted to ride in, but the avatar was not suited for that lifestyle. As I had not invested anything into that avatar, I simply created an Alt. I set this one up right, learning from the mistakes I had made before with the original avatar. So, I may have had a fresh "born on" date, but I was not a n00b.

I still pop online with the Alt from time to time ... and recently decided to fix that one up. Geeeeez ... got to have a skin. Got to have better clothes. Got to refine the shape. Got to log in with the other account so I can transfer funds to my alt. Got to make sure both accounts have modify rights to each other's items. Got to transfer the transferrable inventory items to the original account which I now consider my Alt.

The list goes on.

Some people I know simply have an Alt that owns everything ... one account owns the land and handles all the money distribution. It certainly keeps you from making an impulse buy when you have to log out, log in under the alt, transfer funds, log out, log back in under the other account, and *then* go buy the item.

Some people I know have alts of different genders. Depending on their mood that day I guess.

Some people I know with alts use them to keep one "normal" and one furry or nekko. Or maybe they have one alt that is a child avy, or a teenage avy, while their main character is an adult.

So, there are many reasons to have an Alt. But they can't share inventory.

One of my alts is specificly a male Human, with no trace of being "furry" other than a group membership that indicates he works for one of my companies, and no indication that he's run by a woman. I use 'him' primarily to go to places where furries or females are less than welcome, like if my building work requires checking out a Gorean Sim.

Lots of places. Gor mostly. Or anywhere where the landowner doesn't want them.

Only unwelcome in the sense that they are not the right Genre for the theme, much like wandering round a Wildwest themed Roleplay sim in a Star Wars costume could be disrespectful. Sorta like turning up to a funeral wearing a clown suit...

Depends on who the Guest of Honor is.

Gorean sims are a prime case there. In the RP scene that they are trying to establish, non-Human "furries" simply don't exist, and females are, for the most part, expected to be sex slaves for any male that catches them. Not my scene, at all. I am a very self-assertive female, and not inclined to be someone's submissive toy. Most Goreans would not like dealing with my female Human form, if I reacted in-character to them.

But I do, on occasion, do building projects for individual Goreans. I'm making a quarter-sim build for a Gorean right now, in fact. And when I go to a Gorean sim to get reference information, I go in a male Human form, or as a male alt, to respect their rules and their roleplay restrictions. It isn't my scene, but I don't have to disrupt their game by forcing them to look at a creature that simply can't exist on the world of Gor, or who acts in a manner inconsistent with their roleplay rules. I may not want to play their game, but their money is as good as anyone else's, and some of them have no qualms about hiring a female furry to do high-quality work for them.

There are other groups of individuals who, for whatever reason, simply don't like furries. Mostly griefer groups, but also some "realistic" roleplay sims, like one that used to exist for simulating a historicly accurate rendition of feudal-era Japan. I mostly avoid such places, but again, if business required me to go to such a sim, I could use my Human male alt to visit it safely.

Don't forget, too, that if you want to do stuff like post in forums, JIRA, or the Wiki, you need to validate the alt as well as your original avatar. That means credit card info, etc.

I thought i had no use at all for an alt. then after using SL for a while, i found the following uses:

1) Checking object permissions.

2) Being 2 places at once. You CAN have your cake and eat it too ( in SL ).

3) Checking object permissions.

4) Bestowing annonomous surprises on ones friends.

5) Checking object permissions.

Alts are also great for checking parcel access permissions.

yes, an alt is invaluable for a business owner. it's the safe and only sure way to test how the buying/unpacking/setting up/updating/whatever process will really go.

Two alts at least for me building.

One that's in the groups and has modify permissions so I can do texture work and let the customer IMs go to email on my Ace account where I can deal with them instead of losing them to an SL crash, and another alt who isn't in the group and has no rights, to check permissions.

And the alt with the cool surname for fun...
