I have an item out in world that is due an update. I get the offline email from the creator/creator's hippo machine saying they are giving me the updated item. But when I log in, I don't have the IM and the option to accept the item. My IM's aren't maxed out. Any ideas on what is up. Oh and the creator is not muted.

Exactly the same thing has been happening to me of late.

Are you using Emerald? And do you have OTR enabled? I had a LOT of trouble with missing IMs when I was using that, so much so that I finally disabled it. LL is going to make it illegal soon anyway.

It could actually be a case of your IMs being capped Chris, as IMs would include lots of other things besides offline IMs you may receive from another avatar. Things like scripted objects that use llInstantMessage, friends requests, and the lsl function llGiveInventory all count towards your offline IM limit which people guess is around 15 offline IMs. This is a good review of the whole thing: http://stindberg.blogspot.com/2009/11/why-inventory-transactions-fail-and.html

Or it could just be a case of SL be farked up as usual :p

Actually when you search for 'limits' in the wiki, you will find this:

From: someone
Chat (text)
Whisper distance - 10 m
Chat distance - 20 m
Shout distance - 100 m
Rule of thumb: when you're at default zoom (View > Reset View), if you can see another person's nametag, they can see your chat. If they're far enough away that you don't see a nametag, they won't "hear" you unless you shout.
Gestures can't be shouted.
Max. length of a chat message - 1023 bytes/single-byte characters
The same holds true for an IM <-> email replies.
Capped - Maximum number of offline messages (involving IMs, inventory offers, group notices and group invitations) received before messages get capped is 25.
Senders can't know whether their messages were capped or not.
Email -> IM replies can be sent up to 5 days after receiving the offline IM the email is meant to answer.[blog]
IMs are retained on Linden Lab's servers for up to 31 days before being discarded. For example, if someone sends you an Instant Message and the next time you login is 33 days later, you won't get it.
Torley confirmed this with Kelly Linden.

I've been getting both for a week or two now: some offline IMs show in-world but never in e-mail and some offline IMs show in e-mail but not as offlines when logging on (definitely not capped).

And of course the wonderful ancient bug where any IM sent to you while you're tp'ing or crossing region borders gets sent to offline.

I also had to flip the "Receive group notices" to off and back on because I realized I wasn't getting group notices for half the groups I'm in (whether I was online or offline).

This only happens with the one IM. It is sent in the middle of the night my time, so I am not online, unless someone has hacked my account and is coming on to pretend to be me while I am asleep and just happens to be teleporting every night at the exact moment the creator is contacting me.

If it's a hippo group message there's a way of getting the message again from their machine, the exact method has totally escaped me because I haven't had need of Hippo groups for a while.

Check your mute list to make sure you didn't accidentally mute it as well.

Chris - here is the Hippo site: http://www.hippo-tech-sl.com/secure/

Some hippo owners will allow redelivery of attachments, so you can create a login there, check the msgs/deliveries for that group, and possibly request a redelivery.

Sometimes it is easier to try and work around an LL wacko than try to figure it out.

The exact opposite thing has been happening to me. I've been getting IMs inworld and not sent to my email. Last time I checked, I had the Emerald viewer configured to send the IMs inworld and to my email.

Is LL going to stop the Emerald viewer or is that just a rumor?

Well then I can only assume you're talking about the chronic problem I have been living with for a year or so. I miss IMs on a regular basis, and it has nothing to do with whether or not I have them going to IM or not. SL just eats IM sometimes, and there's nothing to be done about it except complain, which won't do any good. That's the only reason I have mine going to IM, so that I can get the ones that I miss inworld.

I have been missing IMs in SL for over a month. Because of that, i now keep my email open so that i catch the IMs that go directly to email while i am chatting with a person so i can try and catch everything they say.

It is really getting tiresome, and Emerald OTR has nothing to do with it, though that feature is the suck.
