Assets and their importance?

K, this maybe the absolute worst time to ask this question. But the asset/inventory servers have been migrated and up and down, for what seems like eons here.
And as expected, my items I am building are all borked, nothing will transfer properly for I would estimate as far back as Nov 2008. At least to my knowledge, that would be around the time that I attempted a group build, and the transferring is a mess. One day it's ok, the next items have limited rights, we transfer full perm objects back and forth, and they are full perm in my inventory, and on rez are no copy. So if I work on such an object, well that is pretty pointless.
So aside from resetting every prims attributes, rescripting things some 3 and 4 times now. Is this an asset problem, is everything really an asset problem? Or have I just gone a bit crazy here.
But can this sort of problem affect things like physics and such as well. Say you have a physical vehicle with a greyed out script, or an asset that takes some 10 minutes to load in. I maybe crazy, but will this not affect performance of scripts too? I mean if the SL client can't get the assets on a script in time to cue it, then what is it reading anyway?
Just curious, trying to figure out what are the 'normal' SL troubles and what things are my fault. I am in no way technical, not at all, just curious.

This reply doesn't make any attempt to answer the question, because I can't answer it.
I've given up on LL ever being able to make SL, or an SL-like system, work properly and consistently. My opinion is that they don't have the money to do it, or they are unwilling to spend the money to do it, or they don't have the expertise to do it - or various combinations of those. I don't expect anything better from them, so I don't get disappointed.

I'm sure this isn't all the trouble, but unless one understands how and when permissions are baked, the behavior can be pretty confusing. If the "slam bit" isn't second nature, it may help to read through this thread from Scripting Tips: /54/75/287696/1.html for an explanation of how it works, and how it's sometimes useful that it works the non-intuitive way that it does. Scripts: It's certainly the case that getting the text of a script to the viewer is a separate operation from getting its bytecode loaded and executing on the sim. But I have no idea how separately the text and bytecode are stored and referenced. Other than that, yeah, the asset cluster still throws a sprocket occasionally, despite being the sink for untold Linden resources for what seems like forever.

Well thanks, I guess that is a bit of a mystery then. But yes, consistency would be what I was aiming for. It's so crazy as a developer to work with pretty much random variables that change daily.

From: Ashe1 Writer You betcha I said you would. When I eventually got to sleep I did too too, but it's best related in private, where it can cause some things I have to say that I've never spent a more 'rewardling' time with anyone in SL You made it perfect from beginning to end. I hope I'm not embarrassing you.

Atom Burma, I hope that clears up how permissions work for you.
