i believe that is a script that uses the green chat..i don't believe we can use them unless the chat is typed into a scripted item..
it's been awhile for me but that is sort of how i remember it..

The green text comes from an object. There are many of them on the grid that will repeat what you say or say what you tell them to say.

Shouting is extremely rude and will get you muted by many people. If the person you are talking is outside of normal chat range, take it to group chat or IM.

Look in Edit / Preferences / Text Chat. There's a little chart there where you can set what colors are used by different kinds of text. By default, Objects chat in green. That means that scripted chat will appear in that color, whether it's llWhisper(), llSay(), llShout(), or llInstantMessage(). (The exception is a special kind of chat, llOwnerSay(), which appears yellow by default.)

One free object that seems to do what I think is desired is . This is not an endorsement of that product: I've never used it or anything, it just looks like the sort of thing being asked.

It's a trivial script, so if that doesn't meet the need, reply with any missing details and somebody should be able to throw something together in short order.

That said, what Chris says is true, and important. Unless you own an entire, completely isolated island devoted to one activity for which the chat is essential, shouting is almost never what you want to do (green text or not). It carries 100m, and is universally loathed (even more than CAPS LOCK TEXT).

There is a very desirable feature request, http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-1224, that would go a long way in reducing the temptation to llShout() inappropriately.

[Edit to add: CAPS LOCK TEXT is best reserved for tributes to Billy Mays, RIP.]

You can't set your chat text to where only a "shout " is green. You can edit your general chat colors in preferences, using the color picker, but you can't for example make your "normal" chat blue, and your "shouts" green. They all will have to be one color, based upon User, System. Objects, etc. You can differentiate each category, but you can't differentiate within each category.

How to shout:
Hit "enter" to start the chat line.
Type in what you want to say.
Click the "shout" button that is on the right hand side of the text input field.

Holding down 'Ctrl' as you hit the return button after typing also shouts your chat (although I seem to have temporarily disabled this feature in my viewer). You can change the colours of your shouts, says and whispers under the Text tab in Preferences as Qie described above but be aware that these changes will only be apparent in your viewer. If you actually want the green coloured text to be visible to others then you will have to go through an object.

Follow this link and check out llSay, llOwnerSay, llRegionSay, llWhisper, llShout and llInstantMessage under 'Functions' for more details on how to script chat text:

Also, if you create an object ('Ctrl+4' and click on the ground) then right-click and choose 'Edit' you will see five tabs: go to the last one named 'Contents' and click the 'New Script' button. This will generate a .. guess what? ... new script that causes the object you created to say "Hello Avatar!" as it initialises and after that it will say "Touched" (both in in green text, you will be interested to hear) when you touch it.

Open that simple script, see how it works, and mess about with it using any of the functions I mentioned above.

Note: It would be better to post any further enquiries about scripting in the Scripting Tips forum.

BTW - the text from objects is only green if you have not changed the default colors used for the different types of text.

:cool:

In general you can't change the color that your chats appear to other people. If you speak, it will appear in whatever color they have set (usually white) for other people speaking. If you use an object to "rebroadcast" things that you say, that will appear in whatever color (usually green) they have set for objects speaking. You probably don't really want your speech to appear in the "object speaking" color most of the time; I think most people have gotten used to more or less ignoring alot of what objects say, since it's often spam and/or silly stuff...

Whisper: 10 meters.
Normal chat: 20 meters.
Shout: 96 meters.
Scripted objects have the same distance limits.

(Correct me if I in wrong.)

If you are Estate owner or have Estate manager rights, and you want to make sure even people 4k meters above you get the message:

World - Region/Estate. then select 'send message to region'

If you want to draw attention to yourself by "speaking in green" (through a script), you're barking up the wrong tree. Green signals an object speaking, and generally has all the effect of using random spaces and capitals in your mail subject: Instantly and subconsciously filtered out as spam.
So unless you have a really good, specific reason for speaking through an object (and no, automated greetings which are oh-so-personal they can even speak the full name of nearby avatars is not a good reason), you're most likely doing yourself a disservice by going through an object.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! YOU GET A FREE SCRIPT!!!

CODE

default{
state_entry(){
llSetObjectName( llKey2Name( llGetOwner() ) );
llListen( 3, "", llGetOwner(), "" );
}

listen( integer vInt, string vStr, key vKey, string vStrMsg ){
llShout( 0, vStrMsg );
}

changed( integer vBitChg ){
if (CHANGED_OWNER & vBitChg){
llResetScript();
}
}
}

JUST TYPE /3 < MESSAGE GOES HERE > AND BOOM! YOU'VE JUST SHOUTED IN GREEN!!!
(blame Qie)

Since you specifically asked for it: Shout is 100 meters. (Max sensor range is 96, and yes, those two really are different).
