http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/03/29/a-new-improved-stability-second-life-simulator-is-on-the-way-to-your-region/From: Sidewinder Linden What Is Happening? As part of our continued effort to increase the stability and reliability of Second Life, we are happy to announce a new simulator that significantly reduces region crashes. This release is the result of the Havok™4 project, a project that updated the physics engine used to determine all movement of objects in Second Life.
When Will It Happen? - Monday March 31: Evaluate how the Early Adopter deploy of RC3 went over the weekend
If all goes well over the weekend with RC3 on the Second Life Early Adopter regions, then:
- Monday March 31: Deploy the new simulator to 1500-2000 regions
- Tuesday April 1: Deploy the new simulator to the rest of the regions on Second Life
We will be watching the deploy process closely, as this is a major update, and may opt to delay the larger deploys if we see critical issues in the first phases. Status updates will be provided on the blog. ...
Woooo!! Go Sidewinder!! OBQuestion: is this good? I think so!

I would respond in an emphatically affirmative manner. i.e. hell yes!

Wonderful news. But a general rollout on April 1st? Should that be cause to worry?

I thought about blogging that in honor of April first the roll-out will be with gravity reversed, or something bizarre like that… but then thought better of it because many folks might take it seriously /Sidewinder

Every major change to SL is cause to worry, regardless of when it is.
There's no progress without change, though.
At one time people would be expecting major changes and improvements in the user detectable aspects of physics, but it's taken so long to escape from Havoc 1, I suspect some of the folks from back than are no longer members.
I don't find simulator crashes to be much of a problem, but then I'm not paying money and doing work to create events that pretty much go down the tubes when a sim crashes.
It's one thing on the list of things to do gone and thus one step closer to the developers getting to work on something neat like avatar puppeteering .

Well, so many people have been screaming about wanting them to quit working on shiny new stuff and make the grid more stable. This is a major step in doing exactly that.
As with any major deploy, it will probably be a rocky road for a while so, fasten your seat belts and hang on because the roller coaster is about to start up.

Does anyone know just what sort of scripted things might have problems with Havok 4? You would think that the beta folks could have given LL a clue, and they could have put it in the blog...

some (hovering ?) vehicles may behave slightly differently.
with havoc 4 there is also scripted shaded GLOW: llSetPrimitiveParams([25,ALL_SIDES,llFrand(1)];

I tested mine in havok4 sims, and they seem to act more like the script says they would. I think we're all just used to them working wrong. LOL

So far, almost everyting I've tried in Havok 4 has been okay with the exception of Sweegy Mainlow's "Swimmer." Anyone know if an update will be coming for it?

I have a friend with a hugger that's a little weird on H4 also, though I've only seen it weird up in a skybox - maybe a high-altitude thing...

All good, this is all good ...
Also, it'll be interesting to see if the long test cycle for Havok makes its rollout any easier than one would expect. .

I dunno about everyone else, but I'm pretty damn happy about it. Each time I've been on a H4 sim, I haven't encountered any odd issues. I encounter more issues at the regular sims than I do the H4s hehe...so I definately think it's good.
