If it was one of LL's orientation islands then no you can't go back there. The closest would be "Orientation Island Public" or "Help Island Public". If you started in one of the other portals, I don't know whether you can go back or not.

A year ago, new residents rezzed on one of a number of identical Orientation Islands...the sim with the castle, the city, the bandstand, and the volcano. These islands are deliberately one-way. Existing residents can't get to them. Only new residents and officially sanctioned Second Life Mentors. This is to keep bewildered newcomers from being harrassed by more experienced residents, while they get their bearings. A few months ago, all of the Orientation Islands were deleted. Now, new residents first appear on one of a number of Help Islands...the place with the free house, the piano by the sea, and the raised central plaza and walkways. Like the original Orientation Islands, these places are one way only...once you leave, you can't return. HOWEVER: There is a publicly accessible version of a much older Orientation Island design. Search the Places tab for "Orientation Island Public", or check your Map. There are also two publicly-accessible Help Islands which are the same design as the Newbie Help Islands. Search for Help Island Public, or check your Map. You can often find Mentors there, but the places also tend to be crowded and noisy, like most of the Welcome Areas. BUT: If you want to go there because you want to brush up on basic skills, or introduce a new friend to SL, don't. Instead, go to Caledon Oxbridge. This "university" has a really excellent set of self-paced tutorials, and almost always one or more "professors" on duty to answer questions. It's MUCH better than the official Linden Lab "New User Experience".

Is it a public place, what is the tuition, can you jump in start, then pause the tutorials? I'm assuming there is an SLURL searchable for it. Thanks as always, Jackie.

Duh, did a search, found the answer in the fora as is usually the case. Any special knowledge you can add would be helpful for us new kids, though. J.

Caledon Oxbridge is free, it's publicly accessible, and I highly recommend a visit...not just for new residents, but old timers. The first time I went there, *I* learned a couple of new tips.
The professors themselves are an advertisement for the diversity of SL. You may see a rabbit with a set of mechanical wings. Or a rather large (but amiable) dragon. Or a bunneh with an attitude.
Next door is the main NCI campus, where you can sign up for classes in more advanced topics (also free). There is also Steam Sky City nearby, a very fascinating build.
