Anyone have any suggestions on how to make a better map system than the one currently in use?
It's so slow.
I wouldn't mind having week old images of the terrain and objects if they would appear quickly.
Grrrr.....

Ha! the map image on my sim is weeks out of date dispite the rash of rolling restarts we have had recently, and the map takes an eternity to load at best. What was wrong with the old map? it worked at least.
If we have to have a map that inclueds every damned island on the grid at least give us the option to filter them out, or omit them alltogether when we zoom out, like the old map had. My suspicion is that the "new and improved" mapping screen was someones attempt to justify their continued employment, and tinkering for the sake of it. Time has come to sack all Phills college buddys unless they can prove they actualy do something more than draw a paycheck, they could spend the money saved on some "real" programers. |

You could build a bot but you would still have a wait while the data downloads .. Theres many more sims now than there were in 2003. _____________________

I just want back some of the defunct icons that got turned off ages ago. It was really quite useful to be able to see Places and Classifieds and such right on the map. And yeah, a cached version would be fine for that too.

It can't have been just me because I've discussed it with other people several times. Are you saying they work for you, or began working again, or something? _____________________

Getting it up to date would be start. They announced that it was now up to date, but it isn't. I IMed the Linden who announced it, who simply told me to look in his profile - it says not to contact him direct.

Governor Linden's False Advertising in Bay City
05-24-2008 16:32
There's a coffee shop or some such in Bay City by the name of Cafe Deco.
It's owned by Governor Linden. Nice looking place, but.... There's a menu on the wall like this: ![]() The only thing they carry there is the house coffee. There's no cheesecake, no latter, nothing but house coffee. One expects Governors to lie, cheat, steal, and worse in their duties as Governor, but when it comes to doing something important like running a coffee shop they should be held to some kind of standard of honesty and decency. Tantalizing people with offers of Mocca and Chocolate Fudge Cake and then not delivering is just plain cruel. Shame on you Governor Linden. _____________________

Replace it with a single bitmap image that is downloaded on login?. An artistic rendition of SL that is manually updated once per month?. Something nice.. Something simple.. Something that actually works..
The current dynamic map could be sent to the debug menu. |

I went to the SLurl map in a browser. It almost works. The display is much faster and clearer than the SL inworld map.
The SLurl map, which is Google powered, doesn't let you teleport to the place you are viewing, at least not the one I was using on the SL website in the Firefox 3 release candidate. This map does work in the embedded browser. It doesn't have the information displays like land for sale, etc., that the SL viewer's map does, but at least you can see the land and the continents. I wonder if would be possible to enable teleporting from this map, and search for a sim by name on this map. _____________________
