How do i save a conversation

in IM or my chat history for reference?

Select the text and copy it - then create a new notecard from the menu at the top of your inventory window. Then paste. Don't forget to rename the note in case you ever want to find it again.

prefferences -> communication

enable all options below the "busy" mode text EXCEPT "show incoming im in chat log", that option creates havok in chat history

you can change the location of everything stores, all logs are plain text files

save and copy what you want from what you want

Edit, preferences, Communication then check the log IM and Log Chat boxes.

You may want to change the path to something easier for you to find, or harder for someone else to find what ever the case may be.


The timestamps help a lot as well.

Timestamps are extremely useful if ever asked to prove just about anything ever said

I log all chat, at all times.. just in case.

A comment here brought a similiar question to mind. If these chats are saved as text files, are they saved in my SL files which are not stored on the computer or could someone else using the same computer ever access them? Thanks in advance.

They are stored ON your computer. Someone cuold stumble across them but.. why would they be wandering your directories? lol.. you can set your own path to a secret place.

I use C:\temp\temp files\

to store my logs, its my own directory but doesn't normally draw any attention

In the place where you toggle logs, it says where they are being saved, and you can change it.

btw, quick method for hiding ANY files from prying eyes:

go to your main hard drive directory (Usually C:\ for windows)

And create a new folder, name it Temp

In that file, create another called Temporary Files

Now add in a few randomly chosen files, a couple folders, out of some programs directories (C:\program files\) Make sure you copy, not move, or those programs won't work.

Next, look a bit at them, and decide a name that is inconspicuous, maybe a string of numbers and letters like ae90jh221.

Make that the place where you hide files. Also helpful sometimes is this:

Right click the folder, select properties. On the bottom section of that window is a box marked 'hidden'. Check it. Now that folder will be hidden unless you enable seeing hidden files. Only way to get there would be to enable viewing them or to type in a direct address to it. Or make a shortcut somewhere..w/e lol.

Maybe even give it an icon that is used for .exe files, people usually don't touch that.

Logs chat only if you have it allowed to. Won't log if you disable it. Period.

I keep legal files in a folder called 'Pr0nz'

Much like that old joke -- if you want to be sure something will never be looked at by prying eyes just put it in a box and label it "Public Relations" or "Marketing."

I'd actually be curious what someone felt the need to put in a porn folder, or a Public Relations folder or a marketing folder. Blackmail though, maybe not blackmail.

I put files of importance into my pr0nz folder.. ones that I need to be able to find quickly. Even have a hotkey to that folder.

I put my pr0nz into a folder called "ie3ad" (Random string) and noone will ever find them..lol..

I keep passwords, bank statements, credit info, in the pr0nz folder, in encrypted, password protected zip files..because I'm paranoid. I also have in that pr0nz folder a .exe that will crash my computer, wipe the harddrive on the reboot, and then forcibly overheat my processor to melting point (Or until it stops for some other reason)
