Is anyone else seeing a process called SLplugin.exe when running their SL..
I just checked my processes and there were like 3 of them running..I don't recall seeing these before..Does anyone have any idea what they do or if they are even sposed to be there?
I'm using Snowglobe 1.2.4 (3007) Nov 18 2009 12:11:13 (Snowglobe Release)

It's part of the new media system.
The reason so many are running is they have crashed and failed to shut down. It is safe to kill them with taskman.

In Snowglobe (and SL 2.0 for which the thing was really written for), SPLugin is what replaces the built-in web browser and parcel media stuff. Once you have used search in a session, it will be normal to have at least 4 copies running. It's pretty safe to kill the processes, but the search browsers will lose their place (you'll notice the back button goes dim) SLPlugin itself is fairly tame, but the viewer above and the plugins below still need a little work. Right now they are still a little too eager to chatter amongst themselves when it's OK for them to relax and take breaks, and they get carried away.

It's the thing that doesn't work on my computer in any of the viewers that use it, producing error messages withthe term" llMediaPlugin"or something similar.
Wonderful.

A whole lot of those errors went away for me with a simple timeout tweak. Unfortunately that's a compile time change at the moment, but the default is being bumped to see how that goes. Some logging helps just went in today or yesterday that should make debugging way easier, there are definitely improvements possible but up to now it's been tough to see where the pain points are.

It's the wave of the future for connecting SL to the rest of the world, and more. It doesn't 'replace' the web browser, there's a web kit plugin, from which the internal browser (as well as browser on a prim, not just static web page) will interface through. This will give us the ability to have dynamic, clickable, scrollable interactive web pages on a prim. Web kit, if you're unfamiliar is Apples, open source project that has functions used primarily in web browsers. Safari, the web browser on my iPhone was built with web kit, and LL was VERY smart to make this one of the first plugins available for the new media plug in system.
Aside from web browsing and playing streaming media, a plugin can be written for virtually anything including Java and Flash content as well. Everyone's been dyin' for a whiteboard on a prim... well, how about just use one of many flash or java whiteboards out there. How about going to youtube.com and interacting with the flash media player and playing youtube videos right from the main page. How about flash content... games, applications, etc. This feature will expand SL in ways that will change SL quite a bit. Something new comes down the pike... no problem, any 3rd party developer will be able to write a plugin for it, and that new system will be able to be used in SL. Right now, virtually all of the computing that goes on in SL happens on the servers running LSL code. Soon, much of that load can be offloaded to 3rd party servers running flash or java applications, thus taking the load off of SL's servers. This system will be amazing, but the average user won't see anything right away, rather, it'll come in over time. Take sculpties for example. The first day we had them, SL looked the same as it did without them, but 2 years plus later, sculpties and sculpting tools are everywhere. It'll be the same with the new media system. So poo to all you ding dongs out there who think it's something stupid just because you don't know what it is or what it does.

From: someone Everyone's been dyin' for a whiteboard on a prim... They have? So long as this is restricted to the current media streaming mechanism, it's OK. As soon as this gets extended so you can apply a URL to the face of a prim, rather than having it restricted to people who have the right to set the parcel media texture, privacy in SL will take another huge hit. And, yes, there are plenty of people who are pushing for that.

Wait: what? So how will this work? Suppose somebody in Ahern is wearing a prim on which llSetPrimMediaParams() has been called--does it expose the IP addresses of everybody in rezzing range to the site set for that prim face? If so, it will be dreadfully easy to do dreadful things. If not... hmmm, I can't see how it could work any other way: proxying all this through Linden network repeaters would be bandwidth-prohibitive. What am I missing?

What am I missing? If it actually does proxy through LL, that sounds pretty safe assuming it doesn't put interesting info in the headers. Do we know it is/will-be proxied? I'd guess it doesn't - not only would it be expensive for LL but it seems like it'd be pretty slow for interactive stuff. I suspect I will disable this option for general use but if they also made it so you could put raw html on a prim, I'd be into that. Always hated having to upload pictures to do text.. From: Qie Niangao So how will this work? As near as I can tell about what's currently being planned, they are not going full bore for a general media/html/whatever on a prim any more, they're just going to provide more capabilities for the existing media texture. At one point, however, they WERE planning on allowing you to set a URL as a texture, and the scenario you describe would have been possible. If this takes off, that is the logical next step. What a number of people (including myself) proposed as an alternative was to allow script-provided text rendering directly on a prim face. I suggested just plain text as a start, but other people suggested SVG and HTML. Something like HTML rendering on a prim face with the code supplied from the script directly or from a notecard in the prim contents. Embedded images could be supplied from the prim contents or directly attached in the notecard. HTML notecards with images supplied from the notecard contents would also be very cool.

I think the parcel media would be much more effective if we could use more than one parcel media texture, each using it's own media url.
I don't think it would need to be unlimited or a large number in order to increase it's usefulness a great deal.
Two media urls per parcel would be much more useful than one, I suspect.

And we all bitch about lag. I see things like this as another source of both client side and server side lag. Everyone wants something, no one wants lag........where does it end? Like benefits..........they must be paid for in some form. Once implimented they never go away.
Careful what you wish for.

Careful what you wish for. By supporting external content like flash and java via plugins, this will reduce lag, not create more. The reason it was done as a plugin was so that the client wont need a new release every time someone writes a new plugin for various things, and, 3rd parties will more easily be able to create them without tying it to the viewer. @Argent: What bothers you about having interactive content on a prim? As far as the whole IP issue goes, I don't see the big deal. If I can con someone into following a link to a web page that I have access to the IP logs, then the same effect can already be achieved. If one is concerned, don't visit any web pages in SL, or on the web for that matter, or figure out how to spoof your IP if find that necessary.

Yes, yes, social engineering can't be prevented technically. But you can learn not to be social-engineered. But if the normal texture of normal prims is a website, the PN will be able to grab people's IP address en-mass. And you won't be able to stop them. From: someone If one is concerned, don't visit any web pages in SL, I generally don't. From: someone or on the web for that matter Letting some random W-Hat, channer, or PN know "someone visited my website" is a lot different from letting them know "Argent Stonecutter visited my website, and here's his IP address" or "Someone running the SL client has this IP address, if you UDP DOS him with forged SL packets you can crash the client, isn't that fun!"

Whether it creates lag or not (I'm not convinced it will reduce lag....it's something else for your client or system to do. I have a strong enough computer so, on that point, I'm not concerned) there are many who are marginally able to run SL as it is now........and a plug-in could put them over the edge (but not in the normal manner......it probably won't be a graphics issue). It seems everyone is looking for an angle to further themselves in SL and/or RL............and they paint a rosey picture of what it can do to make it "better" for the us. They never tell you what it can do for the user of of the new and "useful" add on..........it's merely another way to get something from the average person who uses the platform. It benefits a few...........and you want us to believe it will benefit us all. One of those new "features" we all have come to know and loathe.
I don't believe it........it borders on a scam. It won't help me and 95% of the other regular users of SL. It could put money in your pocket..........and it will most likely cause some new issue for a substantial percentage of the rest of us.
