Are there any non-SL related art THINGS in the game? I mean.. I don't want to go to a gallery and see half naked second life avatars sitting on prim martini glasses. It's just not my cup of marTEAni. lol
I downloaded SL again because my friend said the importing of 3ds max files was more sophisticated. (I haven't seen that yet.)
But the first thing I really did was try and search for something art related.. like classes. I originally wanted to find a few non-college related art classes in my real life city.. but it turns out my city is too small to gather enough people for an advanced art class.
Imagining what could potentially be done in Second Life excites me. Classes on illustration, media, composition, color theory.. for people who just want to LEARN. I even thought they might have implemented Webcam support into Second Life.. because it seems like it could be so useful. (I just imagine a classroom full of prim easels with peoples actual webcams pointed at their real life easels. Of course, any kind of figure or object would have to be on some kind of high def webcam.) No webcam support.. probably for the best.. wouldn't want to walk into one of these figure drawing classes and find some guy jacking off on his webcam.
It just seems like Second Life has so much potential, but it's been wasted. I'm not looking for a SECOND LIFE.. with furries, perverts, and karaoke. I'm looking for more chances to learn while not busy.

I can recommend one place to go that has a variety of classes that are SL based, but can also help with RL skills. I recommend the NCI classes.
Also, I recommend searching for and joining groups that have similar tastes to what you are looking for. Like minds and all that.
To avoid adult stuff, it's simple. Never click the preference to allow you to go to adult land.

There were a few art museums (and similar) that had been replicated in SL. There's the 'Second Louvre Museum', though that one might be gone now. There is also a fabulous making of the Dresden Gallery. Try different search terms to find art exhibits.

There's a gallery of RL art for sale in my store. It's an SL resident's own work (I don't get anything for allowing her to sell from the store). The store is in my signature here but, if you don't have sigs turned on, it's called Prim Savers. There are signs to the Art galleries and you can't mistake which of the two gallery room is the one I'm talking about.

From: Chimn Congrejo (I just imagine a classroom full of prim easels with peoples actual webcams pointed at their real life easels. Of course, any kind of figure or object would have to be on some kind of high def webcam.) That's pretty brilliant. Given the intent of SL and it's huge membership, this sort of thing is what ought to be explored and supported far more. I, too, believe there is more to SL than pornography Trouble with that concept right now is the damn lag problem. Streaming everyone's web cam into one place is guaranteed to cause trouble. Heck, just putting more than a handful of avvies into one place causes trouble. However, it would be fun to have an instructor, with a multimedia display, lecture and demonstrate things to a group and then later everyone comes back and uploads their version of what they learned (i.e. a snapshot of their 'easel' whatever form that might have in RL) to share with the group. Just imagine being part of a group from all over the world, rather than just your own little town - a far wider range of values to explore. I'm sure someone must have thought of this by now. Check with NCI

Phil's recommendation is right on the money, don't miss it! And come to my sim, Cape Able and visit our gallery there. Our artists are all disabled in rl, and they create in different venues, paintings, sculpture, photography. Actually this is kind of a bad day/week to be advertising this as am in the process of uninstalling the current exhibit to install a new exhibit 2nd week in January, but you can get the idea anyway of what we have there. We cannot sell any art, because the sim is non-profit, so we suggest if you like something and want to buy, to contact the artist directly, we just can't sell from the object. We just exhibit it.
And search for Ghosty Kips and see his gallery and ummm (so much ART, so little time, sigh).

There used to be an automated HUD for gallery tours around SL. Does that still exist? I haven't seen kiosks for it recently.

Yes the HUD still exists and is going strong! Developed by Sasun Steinbeck, the Gallery Tour HUD is the best way to get info on art in SL. Start here to get a list of galleries :: http://sasun.info/artgalleriesofsl.aspxOnce you visit a gallery on this list find the Art Galleries Kiosk - when you click it you will get the HUD for free. If you are looking for classes I might suggest TLE - if you don't see what you want make a request! :: http://tleinsl.blogspot.com/And you are always welcome at Force Planet : )) http://itony.me

My gallery Cartoon World. No screenshots are on display as part of the exhibit.
Look at the Map on Bay City - Falconmoon. See that big blue dot? Well okay, it looks like a hexagon. Anyway, feel free to drop in and visit the towers via teleporter.

Carl Metropolitan has a gallery of resident art (and no martini girls in sight there!). Look up his profile for a pick. For what has been done in SL (but is sadly no longer viewable in world) you should really look at this link http://www.blip.tv/file/304481 this was a few years ago even (imagine what he could do now). You wont regret it. There are some nice photographer-groups, few of them are for martini girls or fashion photos.

The Blackwater region, http://slurl.com/secondlife/blackwater , is one of my favorites. It's just a big empty region with works by various artists strewn about. Good stuff.

That's cool; who pays for it, those random artists? I wouldn't mind donating to a place like that, to help it keep going.

Showing art through in-world galleries seemed odd to me previously considering the ease of which you can get a website gallery up and running, like say on deviantART. But the more exposure the better, I guess Luskwood's Skunk Cafe runs an art show-and-tell on the 3rd Saturday of each month, including a monthly theme. Last time they also did a 30-minute sketch challenge which was pretty fun. It has a bit of everything, not just SL screenshots - illustrations and RL photos as well. Still, that's not traditional 'real' art that you see in galleries, so it may not be of interest. That it's also a furry area (albeit PG) may turn you off even more xD I should visit galleries more often; being a sort of hobby fantasy illustrator I tend not to look at much else, could use the inspiration

Try visiting some of the universities and colleges in SL if art theory, life drawing, and art history is what you are after.

If you want to see art, maybe you should visit some of the better sculpted shoe and boot shops. The sculpts are getting really amazing and detailed.
