But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

A very human fellow.

I have missed him so much in Vanity Fair. Loved his style.

Dominick Dunne - author, father of Griffin Dunne and Dominique Dunne, actors. Dominique appeared in the film "Poltergeist" and tragically was murdered by her then-boyfriend.

The light sentence led to a depression then a resolve to address such issues in the justice system by covering the stories. He was a correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine for the Menendez and O.J. Simpson trials.

He wrote several compelling books as well. But many saw him as part of the national conscience. A gentle soul. He will be missed.

You're welcome.

He also was courageous in the face of obvious yet quietly accepted b.s., a trait I really like.

Yes - once that occured to me also, sable, I did get a bit misty eyed. Her death was a huge impact in his life. Can't imagine what the Dunne family went through.

Me neither. You know the guy that killed he I believe only did a short stunt in prison. Like less than 5 years. Now he's changed his name and works as a chef. Mr. Dunne rightfully so was outraged!

Two years, and yes, Dominique's boyfriend was already a chef and found a job doing the same upon release from prison.

Mr. Dunne's official website has a nice eulogy up.

Ok, I need to find out why he only got two years. That seems nuts.

Unfortunately that's the legal system in America. And yes, it is an especially painful example.

I have noticed that if the crime consists of a man murdering his current or former lover, the sentence served is frequently 3 to 7 years. It's horrible.

By contrast - a woman commiting a similar crime often gets life in prison, whether it was technically self defense or not (I say 'technically' because in such cases direct threat is called into doubt, vs. ongoing/implied, i.e. battered woman syndrome.)

Not just in America, I'm afraid. A friend of mine (and the OP of a certain necro thread that is currently hanging here on the front page of the forum) does a lot of work with rape and violence against women in Scotland. She's often pointed out that the conviction rate for rape in that country is about 6%. Which would seem to suggest that 94% of the women who are claiming to have been sexually assaulted are "lying."

The system, as they say, sucks.
