My understanding is that you have to change stuff in the viewer code - so if you can program, download the source for the viewer and have at it.

Are you sure it's not a "titler", a scripted object that uses llSetText to put text over an avatar?
Titler's are available for free, and can make multiple line text.
The title field for a role appears to accept only 20 characters, in the standard LL viewer, at least, so even if the title was put on three lines, it wouldn't be very long.

I don't mean to sound....'testy' but after almost three years I know what a titler is. No, this was a group tag it looks something like:

But he used letters and numbers with circles.

It's carriage returns in the title text (0x0D aka \r) done with a non-standard Viewer or GridProxy
