Well I hope this doesn't get locked...it's kind of a question AND an answer. Anyway, I got some kind of file corruption on my machine after running SL fine for months.

I have heard a lot of other people describe this problem and we tried a "million" ways to fix it, many ended up re-installing Windows.

After crashing before the Log-In Screen pops up over and over, I managed to find a "Band-Aid" fix with help from folks on the Forums...but I STILL have a question :P.

I'm still wondering if there's a more "conventional" solution, because our quick-fix involves going through the Beta browser:

If you just want to see the fix, scroll down. The list is here so you'll know everything we tried beforehand.

(these steps ain't all in the order in which they were performed)
[SPECIAL "Thank Yous" To Rock Ryder and SuezanneC Baskerville for help]
++++++++++++++++++++++++

* I uninstalled the Second Life Client, and the BETA Client, then emptied the Recycling Bin.

* I tried to do a system retore, which for some mystical reason "failed"

* I deleted all extraneous Cache files (I run Windows XP so those would be:
  1. On a Windows PC: C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data\SecondLife\cache
  2. On a Mac: [YOUR USERNAME]/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/cache

* I ran a disk Defrag, and a Registry Cleaner

* I talked back and forth with LL Support over the phone and through E-Mail

* I updated my video Drivers straight from the manufacturer's website

* I uninstalled and re-installed my video card

* I Checked to make sure my QuickTime and Microsoft .NET Framework were up to date and current

* I made sure my machine was 100% virus-free

* I deleted all my space-wasting Temp files

* Early last year when this happened before, I tried steps like these for days, then gave up and did an FDISK, formatted and re-installed my OS, since I didn't have much data to lose.

* I did another search to see where my name/account infomation is being stored on my PC after I uninstall and delete my Second Life folder in "Documents and Settings".

Using Windows Search, All Files and Folders
All of part of the Filename = *.*
A word or phrase in the file = [my Avatar name here]
Look in: Local Hard Drives

* I tried making a free account to test with (from a remote computer) , tried to get in with it to see if I could clear the Cache that way, "no cigar".

* I made sure that every time I uninstalled, I deleted the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\%UserName%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings

Which holds the settings.xml file

* I re-seated my video card firmly in place, in my motherboard slot

* I WOULD have tried removing all attatchments & logging in at different locations, like Pooley, if I had been able to get to the log-in/welcome screen before crashing

* I did a manual regedit check for every entry that says "Second Life" to delete them all.

* Have you run the Windows XP Recovery Console and done a repair? (Boot from XP CD, select R for repair)

* I tried the regular SL client, the release candidate, and the firstlook windlight client.

The Windlight Client gave me a message saying that my computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements to run Second Life. It's been running SL fine for months, just like the last time this happened, so I re-started the Windlight Client just out of curiosity and it exited before the load screen, just like the normal client.

* I did a chkdsk /f and reboot... slept overnight, that didn't work so I made myself another "clean-slate" and did a chkdsk /r and reboot. Nothing, but my pc runs faster, ha ha

* I have tried to log in using the Shortcut created by SL on installation, my own shortcut to the .exe, and I made

* I tried this idea by the heroic and persistant SuezanneC Baskerville, to try and get in, since I'm able to log into the BETA Grid:

"Here's a thing to try - copy the shortcut used to start your beta grid client. Edit the target field in the shortcut so that it attempt to log into the regular grid.
It would end up something like
"C:\Program Files\SecondLifeBetaHavok\SecondLifeBetaHavok.exe" -set SystemLanguage en-us"
