I must be Looney or something, but I have been curious as to the feasibility of being immersed into SL using 3d stereoscopic glasses? Has anyone tried it? Or know of an exsisting solution?

It is in the making :)

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2972

There are no goggles needed, just two eyes and a split screen view. You cross your eyes like when you focus on something nearby and the two pictures overlap to create a 3d illusion.

There are 'VR GLasses' available, so yes. Also, full functionality VR equipment has been in development for a long time. While not widely available, there are some sets out there, though EXTREMELY expensive (I'm talking the full-body you move, things happen kinda thing). Also..not perfect yet.

They're working on it in general ;)

Oh! I remember seeing an article this reminds me of just a day or two ago...

Here it is!

From: someone
Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the Wii Remote

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space.

That quote comes from the amazing video example at the bottom, but at the top I saw finger tracking too. I have no idea if those could be combined but that wouldn't that be more immersive? :)

wow i never even thought about this. Its a pretty exciting idea though lol. Feel like you are actually flying, actually see everything in proportion to yourslef and everything... wow! I think that is what you are talking about lol.

I saw an article a while ago (can't remember where so don't have a source or anything) where they were in the process of developing a sensor where you just have to *think* your avatar to do something and they will! I thought the idea was brilliant. I think it was intended for those who couldn't use a mouse or keyboard because of disability or whatever reason. There was a little video example with it and everything. It was specially designed for SL too.

It's interesting to think how fast this technology has been developed. My stepfather person says it is scary and it is getting too realistic - i find it really exciting!

yep... the red/blue glasses, a duel projector version, and shutter glasses version. http://sl.daleglass.net

There is also another shutter glasses version being developed by a uni in Michigan I think.

If you use the forum Seach function, right between "New Posts" and "Quick Links" and type in "stereoscopic" and press enter, you'll find a number of threads on this stopic. Other related search terms could probably locate others.
