Looks like the lab has been quiet on the technical front because they are (FINALLY!) working on LOD mesh importing and improving GI and AO effects

Must see video

I guess that's why they are allowing thieves to run rampant.

Yay! Chaos has returned to the forum.

Best part? They used the Hulk, a copywritten character. ;)

So, when do we expect the Nintendo DMCA on that Samus mesh? (^_^)y

The demo was shown on SLCC if I remember correctly; there was also a blog post linking to the slides and the full video.

You're not keeping quiet when you announce something to the world :).

(The downside of mesh importing is that depending on how they go about it it would only increase the amount of content theft as existing - not for resale or commercial use - models get imported and sold/used in SL)

I'll show some excitement when LL releases a new RC viewer, with new features like the hidable avatar mesh they should have released months ago. Or at least give a timeline for 2.0 besides "soon."

Philip Linden ran SL much better, there has been 0 obvious technological progress for months now

even just a "yes we are working on it, look we've done this and this" would suffice

I agree with the first statement. It's a shame too, M said so many true things about customer satisfaction in the past, but he's just not doing it right with SL.

But on the second part, they *have* shown stuff they've done. Nyx Linden posted a picture of his avatar alpha masked on the JIRA quite some time ago, and demonstrates this same mask in office hours sometimes. Same on the mesh import thing, screenshots were shown months ago. The problem is, they show, but don't deliver.

And my old saw, the dropped ball with the windlight parcel settings and the promised access by LSL so we could script random weather...

WL is like old news now, they ever even finished it and now it's stuck in mostly useless mode forever >:(

Now, if they'd follow through with them, rather than just showing us what THEY have as toys.

And I'm very glad that I wasn't the only one that thought, "Gee, I wonder if they have permission to use those characters..."

My thoughts exactly. This is old news.

It is very good news, though, obviously. So it's certainly worth repeating. But it's hardly fair to call the company quiet about it, just because any one person apparently missed the original announcement.

I can't disclose any specifics, but from what I've been told LL has an interesting plan in the works to prevent most of that from ever happening. All I can say about it is that my own fears were abated once I was made privy to what they've got in mind.

Once the plan is made public, no doubt the usual dissenting voices from the "LL can do no right" crowd will cry to the heavens about how unfair and stupid and evil and [insert negative adjective of choice here] it is. So you'd best brace yourself for the upcoming flame wars now. But when all is said and done, there will be little wiggle room for people seeking to get away with distributing stolen meshes in SL, and that's a very, very, very good thing.

Sorry I can't say more about how they'll be doing it.

And yeah, the Hulk was a poor choice for an example, since it right away points to IP questions. However, it's important to keep in mind that the video is only a demonstration of a technology, and that the model itself was only ever used internally. It's entirely possible that LL bought that model, and thus have every right to use it inside the confines of the company. Were they to distribute copies of it to the outside world, that would be a problem. But they haven't done that, and it's impossible to imagine that they ever would.

Chosen, gently stated... wasn't there an NDA on the NDA?

Not that I would know anything about that, of course.

Just looking out for you, old friend; not trying to badger.

Thanks, Desmond. But the fact that I agreed not to disclose secrets is not itself a secret. :)

Coming from Mr Model & Textures, I'm quite happy to hear this. TY!
