Hello! I just downloaded and installed the new viewer... but SL wasn't working right for me before I even did that but at least I had an avatar before. Now when I finally got back into SL, my avatar looks like a white blob of plasma. no shape, no nothing. Also I tried to message friends and nobody responded so I assume they could not see me.
Help! what to do?

It seems that we are all mostly in the same boat Artemis... I am a ghosty blob sitting on my couch waiting to be able to TP anywhere!

Im pretty sure your avid is still loading. Just give it a minute or two.

Well you know what being Ruthed is? The blob is the new Ruth. I think it's an SL problem tonight.

Bree is right. The white blob is not a problem with your viewer. It's the new "default av" that appears when your textures haven't loaded. It replaces "Ruth", the old default av, a rather plain looking noobie female.

The reason you had this problem last night was that SL itself was all wonky.

Ilyana had a good suggestion. If we can't have Ruth back, we need to come up with a new name for the phenomenon to replace "Ruthed". Here are some suggestions:

Caspered (Ilyana's entry)
Ghosted
Blobbed
Vapored (or maybe Vaporish, or Vaped)
Cloudied
MistFiled
Gassed
Foggled

I loaded the new viewer yesterday, and also wondered what the 'clouding' was when someone rezzed ... I didn't experience the problem personally, but having been away for a fortnight, I expected to have all sorts of finger troubles, even typing was a challenge !

On names for the phenomenon, I also think 'Caspared' is a good term, otherwise my second choice would be blobbed ...

Although I really do like Caspered, I think Blobbed will catch on. Cloudie is nice too.

Ghosted is already in use...ie, when someone logs out, but their av stays in-world.
