Group Liability?

Huh? What's that? And since it is MY group - where did it go?

And of more concern- did it ding the others in that group????

I've never understood exactly what you're paying for with Group Liability fees. I think it may be the price of being listed in Search.

Unless you reviewed the permissions for all group members and made sure to exclude them from the liabilities charge, then yes, they probably did get dinged for it too. And if you ever sell group land, they'll get a share of the profits.

Whenever I create a new group, I decide how many categories of membership I want, then make sure the permissions for each category are appropriate. And one of the most important permissions is excluding them from both group fees and profits.

I was invited into a new dance club VIP group awhile back and got dinged for for the $1L group liability. That was the first time that ever happened. Happened to my partner as well (same club). Partner sent an IM to the group questioning that and suggesting that perhaps he did not realize that he needed to untick the group liability check for members and requested our lindens back (regardless how small...it can add up over time if we stayed in that group.)

Club owner refunded our lindens and no further deductions occurred. (I was surprised no "sorry for the inconvenience" was tendered.)

Next I joined a land group for RFL - necessary for me to place vendors for donation items on it. (Actually joined two.) One of these again dinged me for the $1L. Contacted the owner and, once again, he did not realize he needed to uncheck that as it had just basically been his home property prior to that.

Now I'm getting dinged from the faculty group for the school for which I am an instructor. Sent off an email this morning to the Dean of the school.

Apparently this little box, buried deep in the abilities window, is a good thing to pay attention to when assigning abilities to members of group land.

I don't know why it's on by default for everyone. If for some reason you decided to sell group held land and hadn't unticked this, everyone in the group would get a share so it can work against group owners too, same if you sell group deeded objects.

Agree, it is not a very intelligent default.

You get this when the group is deeded land and that land has Show In Search (L$30/week) checked..

Thanks- I did just have it show in search- now need to fix it so the other folks don't get hit.

What happens if you have over 30 people with that box checked? How does it decide who DOESN'T pay? Lol.

I have also had the experience several times that the group settings switch back to including members in the liabilities and dividends without anyone resetting them. We have had that happen about 3 times in the last year on Etopia...so it isnt always an error or mistake on the group owner's part.

Everyone shouldn't be included by default, it's a silly default setting.
