Some of you may have noticed me dropping by the 'hangout' quite a lot today..rezzing a host of boats (not at the same time..) and heading south. I had this sudden notion yesterday to attempt to circum-navigate 'our' continent (yes I know it can't be done as the continent's not finished over in the East...but wait..are you SURE it can't be done..?)

Captains Log: I rezzed my craft and headed south-west, pretty straight forward really though some of the sim boundaries proved interesting. Down in the South West I hit a few problems, Maitake..Camella..Kamaga Take and Numazaua sims proved a little tricky, congested and with quite a few red boundary fences to negotiate it's tight..but passible. Hubunny, Zimnago and Calvador are difficult but there are passages through. Watch out for Blarn Isle, the most north westerly property has no through passage, does have red boundary fences and needs to be avoided, better to bear east as soon as you get there. Bearing East, Ribblesdale, Seranil and Troll Sweat (lovely) were congested but easily navigated with care. Besson, Choel and Owen Lars look tricky but there's an open passage on the most northerly boundary making navigation quite straight forward.

After about an 2 hours (fifth attempt) I'd made my way to the most north-easterly seaward point - Corsica Region 5..and that's as far as it goes..you might think. So I unleashed my cunning plan...on the deck of my trusty craft I rezzed my helicopter..and flew on. Managed to travel south to reach the sea again..dropped the chopper down to the sea and rezzed my boat along side (well actually on top of it) and after a scary moment or two launching the boat, sailed west. Majistral and Novitron though both congested have free passages along their southern bondaries. I arrived back at the dock in Allana some two hours later..the place was deserted..it's ok I understand you had better things to do.. :(

I can thoroughly recommend taking to the water from the hangout, there are some great sites to see along the way. I wouldn't use too large a craft as some of the passages are a bit tight. You will need to keep referring to your 'world map' at regular intervals and do remember that that map is not totally up to date but it should get you through. Stay well clear of red boundary fences..your boat will pass through..but you wont. You should allow about two hours for a full circum-navigation and you'll need a medium - small boat and a small helicopter.

Happy sailing/flying folks,

Perre ;)

Hearing adventures like this make me feel great that we chose the plot of land we did for the hangout. We only were able to afford waterfront land bordering the sims you traversed today thanks to the generous donations of all my fellow Pie Throwers. Way to go, team! :)

What size craft would you recommend, Perre? Or, which one specifically worked best?

Perre, you didn't find Malachi's jet-ski whilst on your voyage per chance?

I took Huey up last week and was pleased at how far I could stay in the air and travel a good distance without getting tossed. I was thinking of doing the same thing in the air. I haven't hit the water yet, time to bring out that speedboat I bought a while back.

Aw man, I didn't realize that this had become competitive.

Last night I took a surfboard from F.C.H, pointed my self at the second star to the right and headed straight on 'til morning and circumnavigated the entire globe with no provisions and no navigational instruments and only the rare seagull or dolphin for companionship. Yes, I know that there are supposed monsters and the edge of the so-called "flat earth" to contend with, but my voyage proves these rumors false. Well, at least in my dreams.

Nice work, Perre. Too bad that 151 prim boat of yours was not seaworthy; it sure looked sharp.

And Bilbo, I know exactly where my jetski is, where it will likely remain for a while as the ban-lined property didn't seem much used. Raymond, excellent choice of properties; I don't think you could have done better. Sally, the smaller the craft the better as there are some narrow straits about 3km north of F.C.H.

Next week I shall take up free-diving*; so far I can stay underwater for 20 minutes and need to find 215m deep waters. But I am determined (although I expect that Michael could beat me by 72 hours or more).

Oh, I assure you that you don't want to see headquarters (a.k.a. Ministry of Love, or Minluv). I hear Lexxi is in charge of Room 101.

I love hearing about adventures like these. My first apartment was on the waters edge and one day I did something similar, rezzing a decent sized cabin cruiser to see what was on the other side of the open water. I found land, cruised up and down the coast for a while and entered a small inlet that looked like I could make a clear pass through to a body of water on the other side. I suddenly got a message that I would need to leave the property in 15 seconds, and no quick way for me to navigate the craft out of the area in time so sadly I found both my craft and myself traveling in reverse at a high rate of speed going under the water, eventually under land and at no time did I stop, couldn't stand etc... It was frustrating and I was filled with angst. I really haven't boated since. Maybe its time again....

I used to do things like that when I was still quite new, back in early summer 2006 .. except of course there was no Corsica then. Or Nautilus. And Jeogeot (the sourthern continent) was more of a large poop shaped island really. Took friends for speedboat, yacht and helicopter trips around Heterocera Atoll (the northern continent) quite a few times because I had waterfront land in Linda, Plano and another sim I can't recall. My first long distance journey was during my first week when five of us newbies took a magic carpet from Waterhead Welcome Area to Abbots. Quite a jaunt but it was fun to us back then.

What DID we look like? Wouldn't it be great if we could get video footage of early moments like that?

Something happened around September though (possibly when they decided to host half the servers in Texas) that made long distance journeys really difficult (vehicles dive bombing at sim borders and never recovering, passengers disappearing into the twilight zone and so on)..and I only realised when I recently got waterfront land in a class five sim .. and tried out a very fast boat again .. that class fives are the way to go if you're into vehicles.

Edit: I forgot to ask the question this was leading to:

Are all the sims that make up those eastern continents class fives? I'm thinking of moving from one Corsican parcel to another of the same size in a different sim, but I don't think I'll bother if it's a class four.

Oddly enough I did pass a jet ski out there somewhere unfortunately I can't remember where - I think it was adrift in one of the big open water (one with few properties) sims probably somewhere to the south west. What's more I saw Malachi at the hangout shortly before. I should look to the SW in open water probably within 5 - 10 sims away.

I used a Sea Wolf Cobra G2 v3.5 for the first few attempts (available from Modern Boating, Wetheral (205, 231, 22) - small enough to get through some of the tighter passages and comes in 6 colours. Then I tried a SW-150 which is a little bigger and faster (available from the same supplier) - just small enough and I think only comes in matt black.

I did try the SWC v3.5.1 which is a bit bigger but it sank pretty soon after leaving dock - I wasn't paying attention - and it's one of those wear attachment types of craft, I prefer the jump in and drive types (which the other two are)

Hope that helps..happy sailing

Yep that would have been the SWC 3.5.1..nice boat for tying up at the dock and chatting with friends..but as for epic voyages..make sure you've got your life jacket on ;)

@Perre: What a great log! It makes me want to go explore, too....and there's a sim called Owen Lars? Hilarious!
