I've seen a lot of malls in SL. Most of them are empty and get closed quickly, and there are some that are actually freebie places with some real content on the side. But I've never seen actual mall which has quality content from different merchants in one place and actual traffic.
So, I'm not talking about designer shops like Simone!, or freebie places like YadNi's Junkyard... the closest what I've seen is probably Animation Warehouse.
Am I just ignorant, or do such places exist in SL? And if not, why not?

I like most of the shops on Lemania's sim (Lemania Indigo). And the mall where SD Wears has their main shop -- Urban something, I think. The sim where Adored Clothing is has a good collection of stores, and the mall area outside Sasha's Designs is fairly decent.
I know there are a few others that I visit, but not coming to mind right now.

Check out the Retrology sim. Vintage clothing of all sorts, a good mix of designers, and the sim itself is worth walking through just to walk through.
Also... darn, can't think of the name of the place itself, but on the Dubya sim there is quite a selection of stores and it's pretty to walk through. I don't go there a lot, but the times I've been through there I've found it worthwhile. If you search for Pixeldolls and teleport to the one on the Dubya sim, you'll land right in the middle of it.
Don't Tuli and Ivalde also have malls/shopping centers around them?
Is Le Zoo still around?
I have to admit, malls/shopping centers tend to be things I happen to stumble across - I rarely go out looking for them.

Bonanza Bondage Market & slave Auction. A one of a kind custom built mall, that we just expanded. Traffic 15 to 25k daily. A plethora of quality, original content and a few affiliate vendors. Zero BIAB, no full perms.. just good stuff! http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bonanza%20at%20Waterview/199/206/28

I see plenty of shopping complexes in SL. What are you looking for? Malls tend to target a certain audience/market.

I would defiantly recommend going to LE LOOK . It has a nice selection of stores and areas for male and female skins, hairs, shoes, ect. Plus , when you go to LE LOOK you get a free gift! (Idk what it is since I can`t find it in my mile long inventory).....Good luck with shopping!

I second Creators Pavilion. A few others that leap to mind off the top of my head -
* Second Guy mall * Silent Sparrow has some interesting mall shops around the perimeter * Drowsy is not really a mall but is a beautiful sim with shops from a number of designers * Tableau also is more an extended work of art than a mall, but is loaded with shops from very creative and unusual designers (some are tucked away) * KAO has iTutu (my favorite home-and-landscape shop) and a number of other clever designers
