Well, since Sl has updated past my graphics card, is it possible to use an oder version that isn't so graphically advanced? If so, where would i find it? Everything was fine till about 2 upgrades ago, so certain textures and colors aren't loading, and I'm too strapped financially to upgrade my computer or graphics card

You can get the Nicholaz Viewers here:

http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/

You can get the Boy Lane Cool Viewer here:

http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/

Both offer several versions of viewers. You simply have to install the Old Linden viewer of your choice, then install their files over that. All of them have been updated security wise.

Nicholaz has a wider selection, going all the way back to the 18.0 pre voice viewer, which he calls. I use the 19.0 Cool Viewer right now, it's great, but I used Nicholaz for a long time, and his are great as well.

Most of the third party sites will give you the link to the needed SL version for download, but if not, you can find them all via this Wiki page: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions

QFT!! I'm still using the 18.0 pre-voice viewer with the appropriate Nicholaz overlay and LOVE it. (I plan to update to the Cool Viewer eventually...just too lazy atm...lol).

You could try updating drivers for your video card. My system is past its best now and struggles with Windlight etc, but when I had problems with some textures after one update I found that new drivers fixed the problem.

I think you'll like it. The 19.0 is quicker, and has a few more bells and whistles. It's the best of the non Windlight viewers in my opinion.

In either case, both Nicholaz and Boy Lane deserve a big TYVM for keeping us Luddites in the game.

You'll want to check to see if the viewer has the ability to use the new functions that detect where you touch a prim. Any content created using those functions will be useless on a viewer that doesn't support it, and you may not get an error message letting you know what the problem is.

Whether it does or not is moot in my case. That is the viewer that works on my machine, so whatver it has is what I get.

Been wanting to try out Cool Viewer, but before I install and set up yet another parallel instance of SL on my computer... does the Cool Viewer reinstate the old fashioned Friends List like Nicholaz' viewers do? That's always been the deal killer for me as regards the official LL viewers even if they didn't also suffer performance-wise.

I still maintain if something is working the way *I* like it...that is what matters to *me*. (Still getting used to the LCD monitor...lol)

I haven't installed Cool Viewer yet (think I will go do that now) and I would assume it does reinstate the Friends list like it was pre-voice as that is one of Nicholaz' hallmarks and one reason I stick with his viewers. Going to install now and will report back, unless Brenda answers first. ;)

ETA: The Cool Viewer is by Boy Lane, not Nicholaz. The latest edition of Nicholaz is Eye Candy (his fixes to the Windlight). Think I'll wait until I see an update from Brenda on the Friend's list in Cool Viewer before changing as that is BIG with me too. As well as being able to resize the IM and chat windows as I prefer them.

I have a very good Nvidia card but these latest up to date Drivers are having problems with SL, it is hoped Linden correct the SL viewers.

That will happen sometimes on any video card, and simply clearing the cache may take care of it.

Yes it does. It actually seems to be very much like Nicholaz' versions with a bit more to it. There is an additional tab in the Preferences for some stuff specific to Cool Viewer. I have the Cool Viewer for 1.19.0.5, 1.20.17, and 1.21.6 but pretty much only use the 1.21.6 because of some LL fixes that I want. With Nicholaz, I stayed with the 1.18.5.3 BE-w version because there were things in the EC version that I did not want.

The one thing that sort of drives me nuts in the Cool Viewer (and it might be something I need to set somewhere) is the main Chat window is not initially within the other IM/Group-chat communication box, but undocked. So when I click the IM button, that window comes up with all the various group chat tabs that have been active and any individual IM tabs, but not the "near me" main chat window. To get that, I have to click the history button and it opens a separate window. Then I have to click the little redock button to put it back with all the other communication windows.

Additionally, the other big change I see -- and not sure if this is specific to Cool Viewer or the LL release it goes with vs the Nicholaz stuff -- but crashes are handled a bit different. With Nicholaz, I would get a separate crash window telling me it crashed and I then click OK and that window and the SL window went away. Now the entire SL window just simply closes. I have walked away and come back to just simply find that SL has ended - quite odd actually.

nVidia actually created this problem by suddenly ceasing to support palletized textures somewhere around the 176 series of graphics drivers.

LL has said they'll adjust the viewers, but it probably won't be until 1.23...*maybe* 1.22 if everything else they're working on allows it.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Yes, the Cool Viewer does have the Old Style Friends List setup.

Edit: Lil actually answered already.

I switched from Nicholaz beccause if I'm not mistaken, BEz,which is an 18.5, is the last non Windlight Viewer he did. The CV 19.0 is non WL as well, so I was able to step up a bit, without using WL.

Thanks for the answer LittleMe, and the bonus mini-review is most welcome too :)

I've been using the Nicholaz EC for a while now (my system handles windlight *ok*) and I love it stability- and feature-wise, but LL has recently introduced a couple new features I'm interested in checking out. Just not at the cost of my precious friends list.

The CV has the old UI like Nicholaz and that will stay that way until LL forces us to change. I personally completly dislike the all in one communicate thingy and the few times I used an official viewer I struggled with that "feature".

In general, if you want to use a pre 1.20.17.0 viewer (thats the release with the security fixes), please either use the latest Nicholaz or Cool Viewer builds. Other "old versions" are vulnerable as they do not include the backported security fixes, including all old "official" Linden viewers.
