Hi I was just looking at mono as a platform for deploying .net applications and noticed one of their use cases was a company called Unity... I had a look at Unity and it totally blew me away - particualrily as it could be accessed through a web browser with a plugin. Check out the Tropical Island demo... I mean I'm told Nature's Way id pretty cool - but it's not as cool as this - this is what I would want NW to be! http://unity3d.com/gallery/live-demos/tropical-paradiseNothing like a little distraction at work..

I downloaded the tropical island and explored it. It was impressive, with nice lighting effects. But I don't think it improved on the SL environment all that much. The realistic ground-cover plants and the foamy seashore were something that did improve on SL though. But I don't think there were real shadows, just blotchy ground.

The ground textures and blending was very good - but in fact if you run it full screen you start to see the prims so it's not a massive improvement on SL after all - I loved the littl eostrich thing running around though
I daresay we will get a browser plugin eventually that will allow us to access SL directly through a browser like this demo above - or indeed google lively & others
Added: The lighting demo is great actually you can fling the chairs and tables around and swing the light shade..
Also, with a bit of scripting you can get a multiplayer online gaming environment going for about $3500 in unity licenses - including an asset server license. Crazy huh?

Unity looked neat back when I tried it -- reminded me something of a web-embedded Torque Game Engine. However, the Mac-only dev tools make it a little hard to develop without owning a $2,000 Macbook or G4, so I'd wait a bit until the Windows and cross platform versions come out.

Unity's a 3D game development kit - not really very comparable to Second Life. It runs on the web but - as far as I know - multiple users in the same game at the same time can't interact with each other, normaly.
Some PC programs that do similar thing are Torque (as already mentioned), GameStudio A7, and Garry's Mod.. and I think that TrueSpace was supposed to have some kind of multi-user 3D feature in it.
