No question, just a knee jerk reaction.
Oh wait here’s a question.
Why is 50k online now “Higher-then-usual load”?
Didn’t we once get near 70k online?
Sorry that’s two questions but….pfft

SL positive marketing might have gone out in an area that has not been exposed to it before. This usually causes a rush of free accounts on the grid.
After the French and Portuguese invasions the Lindens had said that they would inform the Mentor group (if they were aware of it) right before any marketing went out to any country that did not have SL yet. Obviously this is not going to happen. . _____________________

It didn't happen, Lian.
Apparently, last week there was a program about SL on Polish TV. This past weekend saw a HUGE influx of Polish newcomers on the Orientation Islands. The Mentors did pass around a Polish "Welcome to SL" notecard to hand out...but we got the notification after the invasion was already underway. Not being able to read Polish, I have no idea what the thing says. It could be "This woman wants to have sex with you." Judging from a few of the newbies I ran into this last weekend, it probably was. ![]() _____________________

This completely disregards the HUGE volunteer team they have at their fingertips. I knwo our money can be spent better than that. This Mentor Teacher guy was actually happy with his role in this plot. Utter nonsense. Linden Lab needs to get someone with real Volunteer Management background to utilize the massive volunteer pool it has at it's fingertips. . _____________________

Well LL also said that they would limit access and suspend new registration during high concurrency too. What happened to that?
…only those Second Life Residents who have transacted with Linden Lab either by being a premium account holder, owning land, or purchasing currency on the LindeX, will be able to log-in. http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/16/contingency-measures-to-ensure-service-as-second-life-grows/#more-777 |

They actually do limit logins now during high load times - or at least there has been a message stating that reason (with corresponding message on the grid status page) a few times in the past couple of months.
However, best I know, there is no actual qualification for who can and cannot log in - they just limit logins. _____________________

The premium-only login thing was abandoned. The interesting stuff in the SL blog seems to come out on the comments more than the articles =)

It may sound like a good idea– but the truth is that basic accounts are not all bots. There are a lot of people with basic accounts who are very rich contributors to Second Life– whether they rent land, spend money, or contribute in other ways by performing and participating in events. Additionally, when the database hits the wall, blocking logins for a few minutes (usually it takes less than 10 minutes) allows the database to get back on its feet than many other things we’ve resorted to. Since logging in is chancy and difficult *anyway* when the database as become overloaded, we block logins because it’s the fastest and lowest impact to get things working as well as possible for everybody again. _____________________

Well I think the three qualifiers listed by Robin should cover those of us who really really really want or need to get on the grid. Hell if someone cant take a few minutes to buy some $Ls on the LindeX, then they should be the one’s to wait for the database to get back on its feet.

Could it be that, by the time they know the DB is getting in trouble, it's already in such deep doo-doo that even querying for whether login attempts are from NPIOF accounts would just push it over the edge? (That's of course assuming payment-info-on-file queries are routed through the central db, as are so many crazy things.)

maybe if they just do as I ask in the op this question of who gets to log in and who doesn’t would be moot

"load" doesn't always correlate directly to user concurrency. You could have 30,000 online, and if enough of them are hitting the message queues and throwing requests at the asset system, you'll have high enough load to cause issues. The only connection between load and concurrency is probability.
