I've been on a building spree off and on for two months now, slowly gearing up to open a shop. As such, I'm uploading a tonne of textures -- bases for items, and product box textures etc.

I keep all my builds organized really tightly, but just let all my textures build up in the main Texture directory. I now have (for me) a tonne of textures.

Would it be wise to organize my textures in any way or just let them pile up. I name them fairly logically so when I want to apply one, I begin typing what I know to be the name. I never really need to hunt for them. But I wonder if I'll reach a critical juncture and wish I had organized them all along.

What do you creators do with your textures after you upload them? Advice, hints, stories?

Thanks.

you can open a second inventory window under file then create folder names and slide from one inventory to the other into those folders you created in you texture folder. Ex. doors, windows, fabric etc and subsets of floders.

Hi Lu. Normally i use tags for search objects. For example for my japanese landmarks i use the tag: [JAPAN] and then the LM's name. And same with other objects, that way searching for

[JAPAN] will show all japanese LM's.

And also it would be good to have all in folders... I try to do that lately.

You might want to invest in a texture organizer. I'd start filtering by type, assuming that you named them that way (brick, marble, window, glass, metal, etc.) and throw them into an organizer with other similar textures.

Lestat's texture organiser.

Only way to go - well, there are probably some more modern ones now. But it serves me well.

I use his and love them! I have one for general textures, with 20 folder. This also stores my photos very nicely. I have a 10 folder one that is just for fabric, but probably could have used a 20 folder organizer for them, also. I have them separated by type of fabric, and it makes it really easy to find what I want. I.E. I want a silk, I just attach my texture organizer HUD and go to the folder for silks/satins. Voila! There they are.

I use hippoIMAGE. It's rezzed inworld, and allows you to share copies (or not) with others. I turn off that feature because I don't make my own textures and respect copyright. It comes in several various sizes and is quite useful, searchable. I can show you how it works if you want.

Lucrezia, I also think you'd benefit from having a texture organizer. Here's a thread that compares various organizers:

I tend to organize by set or by building material. If there is a matching set they all go in the same folder. Otherwise it is by material:

Roofs
Bricks
Stone - natural
Stone - stylized
Stone - marbles
Stucco and Plaster
Walls - Misc
Woods - furniture grade
Woods - planks
Woods - distressed
Woods - Misc

You get the picture.

And a copiable texture organizer is a must and worth every linden you will pay for it.

I keep them organized in folders in my inventory, with a hierarchy..

building
..brick
..fabric
..metal
..misc
..stone
..wood
clothing
store
..vendorposters
..other

and so on like that. Of course that only works well if you remember where you filed everything :) but then, there's also the search function, for when I forget where I put something :)

I've tried the textureorganizer things, but found I was too lazy to rez something to look through it.

Personally, I have tons of custom uploaded textures...and like you, I keep them in my default texture directory, and also similar to you, name them very appropriately...and if I ever forget a texture's name I previously used...I rez that object and check what it's called on the object itself, instead of searching through all of my textures.
