Hey all

I have been desperately trying to set up my xbox 360 controller in second life so it works well. So far I've been having nothing but problems. I haven't been able to find many tutorials or videos on it and the couple I have found haven't worked.

I was wondering if someone could help me set up my controller so I can use it in Second Life without hassle. Left analog stick to move around, right stick for camera, and other buttons to control things like flying, inventory or whatever you think is a good combo. (suggestions are welcome)

I haven't been able to find any numbers to put into the fields that have been successful so far.

I should mention that I am on a Mac. I purchased the Wireless Gaming Receiver for windows and have downloaded the driver for Mac OS X so it recognizes it. It recognizes it fine and seems to work smoothly when configuring it.

ANY help in regards to this issue would be great.

Thanks everyone. I hope to get some help as soon as possible so I can start enjoying Second Life the way I'd like right away.

Cheers

Maybe I'm oblivious, but I've never heard of anyone doing this before.

i know there is an option or something i read in the menu of the kerstien viewer about controllers but i didn't pay much attention to it..i mean it seems like it would add more work to moving around...unless you are doing it for driving and flying and things..then it would be kind of neat i'm sure

Apparently it can be done. One person posted a video on youtube about how to do it but I can't figure out what numbers to enter in and how he's doing it. He wasn't on a mac but I figure that shouldn't matter because as long as I have the driver that recognizes and configures my 360 controller I would figure it's a matter of getting the proper set up in the Second Life preferences to work. This is where I need help.

I went out and got the Microsoft Wireless Gaming Receiver JUST for Second Life thinking it would work based on some of the things I saw and read.

ANY help would be much appreciated.

here is the video I saw

From what little I know of controller conversions...

You're going to have to find third-party software to "map" keys on your controller. If the software can properly recognize the 360 controller as a viable gamepad, you'll need that software to assign commands to the keys/joystick/d-pad on the controller.

I've seen mentions of XBCD and ControlMK to emulate mouse/keyboard commands on an Xbox 360 controller, but beyond that, I don't think I can help you.

Google "XBCD" and "ControlMK" for more information. A lot of this pertains to Windows, by the way, so finding information for usage on a Mac might be a little more difficult.

ETA: Maybe this link might help you a little more?

I already have a driver that allows my mac to read my wireless controller via the Microsoft Wireless Gaming Receiver. Second Life recognizes it but it doesn't work properly. It may be a matter of setting everything correctly in the preferences. If it is, I'm not sure how to do that.

Thanks to everyone who has been trying to assist me so far.

I bought a Logitech Dual Action controller today. Also using a Mac. OS X 10.5.5. Intel processor. What are you using? It probably makes a difference.

Logitech doesn't support Mac, so I downloaded ControllerMate. ($15 for full version. It can be used with many kinds of controllers.) So far, I have mapped some frequent SL actions to keys. The ControllerMate documentation is pretty worthless but I'm making progress. Long way to go. I want to use for sword fights.

Does it sound like I know what I'm doing? LOL. I don't know diddly. Never used a controller before. But they are cheap and it sounds like a cool idea. May be able to help if you get ControllerMate. There are other similar programs. But I didn't look into them.

Google a free application called xpadder.

Best free mapping software for controllers.
You can set it up to load a Second Life profile when you use Second Life. Load a desktop profile to move and interact with the desktop while not in Second Life.

EDIT: I am not sure this program is mac compatible

Hey

I don't think xpadder is mac compatible. Thanks though. Again, I have a driver that recognizes my controller. All buttons and analog sticks work like they are supposed to in the calibration program. It's when I try to use it with Second Life. That's when it's not working right. I believe it may have a lot to do with entering the proper numbers in much like the guy does in the Youtube video. Unfortunately I can't see all of the numbers and the steps I do follow of his stiill don't give me the proper results. IE: when i press forward to walk it walks a few feet then just stops. can't go left or right. When I use the right analog stick to try to move the camera around pressing left will instead activate FLY mode for some reason. Nothing is working correctly.

Any other help would be great. Thanks for your replies so far.

I managed to get what I wanted out of ControllerMate. I'm using that along with the xbox 360 driver for OS X and have the xbox 360 controller disabled in the joystick settings. I managed to map everything I wanted to map to the controller.

Thanks fort all of your help.

Anyone looking for a solution on Windows I used this software:

http://www.pinnaclegameprofiler.com/

Program the left stick to the movement keys, right stick to the mouse, and your pick to all the buttons/triggers/bumpers and you can even handle simple building/editing.

Of course I'd prefer true gamepad support in Second Life... digital movement is soooooo last century.
