This winter season, Linden Lab is pleased to announce a limited time Holiday Marketplace. Not only is it a holiday snowscape, it’s also a land extravaganza. For a one time charge and no recurring land fees, you can have this land for 60 days!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This land will cost 1L and great you think but it is only available to premium members. I think LL have missed something here, if this was available to everyone might it not get non-members hooked on having their own land and thus getting a premium account?

The Auction is simply starting at L$1, it will not actually sell at that value.
I'm thinking that the land auctions have always required Premium account, so the only thing LL is really doing different here is starting the auction at L$1. Therefore, in this particular case, I don't have any issues with what they are doing.

The land will probably cost more than L$1, nobody knows the parcel sizes, nobody knows how the place will be promoted. The sims are named with a Christmas theme that will be delivered a bit late for the Christmas market. Personally I'd spend any such money on promoting your own existing land.

LL have finally fully realised the power of auctions to separate people from their cash. People bid on auctions for a variety of reasons but none more so than simply to win at any cost - just like at any other competitive activity. Adding a special one off gift bag only for auction winners only adds to the must have for those people. It is their trophy when the land has been returned and otherwise forgotten about. It says (at least to them) I am a winner. They may even sell this "win" package to someone else who wants to buy being a winner. Yes, there are people out who would, you know it. By far this could turn out to be LL's biggest money-spinning direction yet

I guess LL making money with their very own platform/game is a bad thing.

When deciding a reasonable price to pay for a product, some people can accurately value the product. Some people make a mistake and undervalue the product. Some people make a mistake and overvalue the product.
Auctions are great at finding the buyers who overvalue the product, and are therefore willing to over-pay for the product.

From: Peggy Paperdoll I guess LL making money with their very own platform/game is a bad thing. No it's a wonderful thing and I'd like to see more of it. I just find this a little tacky and having all the appeal of a new year's day hangover. Gabriele made a good point about the swag though, that's probably more of a hook than the actual parcel auction.
