Just loaded up Opera, the other web browser.( My Firefox has developed little freezes, just like SL did.) Opera is very nice, of course and looks and operates great but there is a Widget thing in Opera called Functions 3D. After easy install.
It generates simple 3D samples from input of math equations like:

Stairs
(sign(-.65-x)+sign(-.35-x)+sign(-.05-x)+sign(.25-x)+sign(.55-x))/7

Just wondering if it's any use, it's just a toy after all. Looks like it uses a similar principal to sculpties. I am prolly wrong there.
It was an interesting find, none the less and I'm sure the Math Dude, Mr Surface, would find some joy there.

I guess very few people have even heard of Opera, let alone used it so I don't expect much response. But I do suggest you give it a run. It seems so damn fast. And functional.
Opera Browser used to be a commercial paid for app but now is free as in free to use.

Have fun folks and be nice to each other.

Pretty easy to do with planar sculpties. The problem is though that they just generate heightmaps - you can see this in how the front of each step in the stair case is a single grid unit, whereas the tops are several.

You'd be better off using parametric equations, that way you can create folds, spheres etc.

I only reply to note that I use Opera at home. Much easier for me to use than the other options. I have no comment on 3D widgets.
