How accurate and complete it is I don't know, but it is definitely long:
http://stats.slbuzz.com/sims/browse

discovered by putting "region list second life" into google

another:

Thanks all.

By the way, the links that you give has different count on sim names. Is the site, manually updated the new sim in their respective database? If so, what particular link they can get the list of new sims?

I am just curious why it has different counts, if it is done programmatically not manually they have the same counts? Right?. But since it has different counts, maybe they do it manually by adding new sim in their database.

But the question right now, where they can get information of the list of new sims? Or how they can get new list of sims? Hope to help me to figure out this things. Thanks.

I don;t think there is or can be an /accurate/ list of names. Sims come and go and change names CONSTANTLY. And there is no api that I know of for getting this data live from LL.

Some sites use objects that people wear as they visit sims to get this info but that is VERY slow and VERY innaccurate.

That first link is off line and the second is WAY full of holes. My 1.5 year old main sim isn't even on it.

When a sim disappears from search, it would be nice to be able to know if it no longer exists or had a name change.

There was a sim called either Desolation or Desolation Island, for which I don't have a LM, and it no longer shows on search. I'd like to know if it still exists.

I'd love to see a truly searchable list of region names, meaning one where I could use wildcards before and after a word to see if any region name contains a specific word. None of the lists mentioned have a search function and the one in world searches by first word of the sim name only.

Certainly the Lindens have a database on this. I wish it could be made more accessible, maybe via the website somewhere.

By the same token, I'd love to be able to sort by continent, as well as mainland/estate.

The in-world map isn't too bad at doing this. Maybe one of the open source monkeys could libsl something up..

I don't know if it is correct or not, does LL assign time to offline selected regions. Like for example shall we say, 5pm the only coordinates is 12,000 - 13, 000 activated . Is that true? This is to lessen resources.

In theory, the whole grid is up 24x7.

Various regions might be down at various times but except for maintenance events like rolling restarts, these should be random - sims that are next to each other on the map probably aren't on the same physical servers.

Heh heh , if you are talking to me... you should be talking to the people that run the sites. All I did was put "second life sim list" or something similar into google and click on a few links.

Max Case's site does offer sim name gathering gadgets for people to wear. I didn't actually see a list of sim names on Max's site. A search box, yes, but a simple list, no, if my memory serves.
