I periodically get login problems and I have an open support call on the problem. Leo Linden is currently investigating - it does seem that you can get situations where you try and login and get various error messages such as "DNS cannot resolve the host name".
Sometimes it can clear if you wait a couple of minutes, other times it will go away if you clear cache. If you ar running on a wireless network, you could try using a cable connection and see if that improves things and if you are using a firewall, try temporarilly disabling it and see if that helps.
I am awaiting some more news on progress about this - so if you notice any particular sequence of events or circumstances that cause your login problems, please post about it.

I couldn't get back in. I relogged as my alt .. perfect. Now someone may suggest or even tell me that in that situation Bilbo would have got in. Maybe so but it did clear itself by the next day. Most of my problems go on their own accord .. inventory not showing .. friends list borked .. search .. hangovers ...
