An Article in Future Nurse magazine: http://include.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080811/NW02/108110084Discusses Tacoma Community College's virtual Emergency Room simulation for nurse training; how cool! Requisite RA question: Do you think that these virtual education systems actually WORK? Or are they just a cool gimmick?

Dunno how well they'd work for Nursing.. except to weed out those that can't handle the attitudes of their patients.
But I can see SL being a really neat training ground for many things that don't require a lot of real hands on experience. After all, wasn't there that worry that terrorists would be using SL as a training ground for cells?

From: Linked article During the simulation, students role-played using their avatars to select interventions for a patient suffering chest pain and cardiac dysrhythmia. The patient's vital signs were projected on the back wall of the ER bay and were updated throughout the session.
Students chose from a group of simulated real-life interventions, including oxygen hookups, medication, CPR, defibrillation, or IV therapy, with their avatars doing the work on screen. Then the simulated patient, controlled by either the instructor or another student, responded realistically to what the students chose.
Decisions made by the students are compiled into a printable log that instructors review with class after the session. I think it's an excellent idea, and no different really than the computer flight simulation training that pilots undergo. It's far easier to train a group of professionals in a virtual environment like that than it is to cram them all into a RL mock-up (and, of course, the real thing would be in use constantly, so they would only be in the way there). It would enable the students to make the kind of snap decisions that would be needed in such situations, and with SL's immersive environment those situations would feel more 'real' and the pressure would be greater (immediately seeing the patient's response and having to respond to *that*) than it would be in a normal classroom with the tutor informing them of the response.

I even remember one newscaster saying they can transfer money to each other in a totally untraceable way which is total rubbish because LL keep track of who sends money to who when and how much etc. Laughable at best lol.

From: Chris Norse "For erections lasting longer than 4 hours please contact the Tacoma Virtual Emergency Room." Hahaha. Maybe the scripts just need to be reset.
