OK, I'm playing dumb for this one. I would think that the selling of avas with cool names, lots of high-end swag, a hefty bank account or all three would be a pretty fair business. Why do I never see this happening? Or, is it, and I'm just not looking in the right place?

Or, is it legal at all?

not legal
as you are not supposed to share your password, etc

(only time that is legal is a death and then requires going through the red tape)

I am sure it does happen though, just underground, hush hush

It is legal, as in not against any real law. However, it is a violation of the Terms of Service.

You won't go to jail but you could loose your account IF they find out.

I would think, regardless of TOS issues, that such an avatar could only be sold at a loss.

Successful game avatars are the result of work time and effort.

In my opinion, successful SL avatars are a result of money and social networking.

The only thing the buyer would be saving is time, but could also possibly risk falling into possible drama like "You're not even the same person anymore" kinda stuff. (=_=)y

Fun subject though... Why try to kill it so soon? (^_^)y

Well, yeah, that's what I meant by 'legal'. :) Should have been more explicit I suppose.

It can be done, within the TOS. You need to send a writen letter to LL to start the transfer though.

The moment the selling of an avatar name was allowed, we'd see a flood of moronic bottom-feeding pond-life twats squatting on good names.
The lowlifes could monitor the last names cycling through the various portals and pounce on the obvious good ones at no cost to themselves. Free signups!!

Spare us that!

It probably is, but underground.

I think that anyone seeing a name for sale should AR the perp, with copies/URLs of the offer.
LL would have to be careful about it though. Such an AR could be used for griefing an innocent name.

by legal that is what I mean... not legal within SL parameters

not like it is a crime or anything, but yes it could cause you to lose the account and be banned

I was about to tell you you can't/shouldn't do this, but you left for lunch ;)
Everyone else has the reasons well-covered by now.

Like I said a few posts ago, you can transfer an account to someone else via a written request to LL. Stop telling him it is impossible, thanks.

Officially, you can't normally transfer SL accounts except by willing them to go to someone else when you die. However, it HAS been known to happen once or twice that LL have approved an account transfer for other reasons. It is NOT a common thing, though, and they don't usually approve them except in very special cases. In other words, they don't casually approve them as a way of getting around the no-transfer restriction. Name-squatting is another issue, although LL *do* sell last names.

It would be nice if they sold last names one at a time. But the current deal is that you have to buy a bulk amount of accounts using that name, and renew your license each year for a fee.

I'd be glad if they let you change your name for a fee - even if it was limited to only once. I know, I know - it does point out when you sign up that you should choose carefully but there's a big difference between trying out SL and staying here... You can change tiers up and down and that involves money - how hard could it be to let you change your onscreen name? And I know you can make an alt to look the same and all that... but the messing about! Handing over everything in your inventory... creating a group for your land. Too much. It wouldn't feel the same, somehow, sounds stupid, I know. I'd always feel I was just being my alt, rather than being me but with a different name.
Just shows how some people can identify with their avatar, huh?
