SL Not Starting - Crash Dialog Always Appears

Hi everyone,

I've been an SL resident for seven months, and over the last several days I've experienced problems getting into SL. Here's the scenario:

1. I choose to start SL. The "Crash occurred" dialog always appears, although I did not always crash during my previous visit to SL.

2. I choose to Send or Not Send hardware information, as requested in the dialog.

3. When the dialog closes, SL does not start. Nothing visible happens.

4. If I restart my computer, and then choose to start SL, then SL would start. After closing SL, the entire scenario starts all over again. Tonight, however, SL doesn't even start.

Please note I reinstalled SL, but that did not help.

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Sincerely,
Avanti

Try clearing cache. Even if you remove SL client things get left behind. Try another client like the Windlight First Look.

Welcome to the club!

I know of several people who this as happened to aswell.

So far there are no answers to this problem.

Everything people are about to suggest has been tried and hasn't worked.

EDIT: That includes what the above poster just suggested aswell, by the way.

That's bad Avanti........

I'm guessing this is the same thing Conan is suffering from? Still no luck Conan?

Avanti, here's the thread with all the advice everyone gave Conan:

/111/97/226570/1.html

Since none of it actually worked I'm not sure how much use that is though.

Gpood luck guys!

Might be a corrupt system driver then. Something that runs your hardware drivers. Maybe try running windows restore from when it was working.

Actually try deleting the entire folder the cache is saved in, this does not get deleted and recreated during an uninstall/re-install.

BTW, SL seems to be very picky. My daughter had problems with the "drivers not up-to-date" issue upon a video card dying and installing a new video card. We tried everything under the sun, multiple drivers and SL viewers. I finally was able to travel and visit with her, and discovered it was a corruption of some sort in her Windows install, probably in the registry. I could not repair her install, as it stuck in a loop trying to detect hardware, and finally had to re-install Windows for her. Windows would start up just fine, and she could run multiple other programs, but not SL. After a fresh install she is up and running fine, and was quite thrilled with Windlight. :^)

About the only things I haven't been able to try is reinstalling windows (as don't have the cd) and using a restore point (as all the ones I set from when SL worked were deleted by a windows security update). These sound like the only answers to the problem. If either of these things work for you, let me know - that way I will know that getting a cd of Vista is the only option.

As an aside - I can get a legal copy of Vista Business Edition for free through my college (technically I have to delete it when I graduate, but am allowed to use it until then). Does anyone know if there is any benefit in this edition as opposed to the Home Basic edition?

You can send faxes for free with Vista Business Edition. Microsoft took out the option in the Vista Home Edition unless you specifically have a fax modem...I think. How that will help you in SL I don't know, lol. You can fax the Lindens!

That seems like scant benefit at best. Atleast I would have the CD though.

Thank you everyone for the valuable information.

I tried JayDee's above suggestion. It appears it may have worked. (I'll keep my fingers crossed for the next several days.) I restored Windows to its state of about six days ago. I also reinstalled the latest version of SL (again). I logged-in and off successfully at least four times since then. So hopefully I am good to go from now on.

Thanks again!

Sincerely,
Avanti
