after trying ever since the newest voice version of sl has come out to get it to work I finnaly gave up and started just using the old version ....once again.... my efforts have included going to the lengths by the advice of sl to erase my ops system and everything on my puter and then wait a week to get the new disks from microsoft reinstall the whole system from scratch ...... now the old version isnt working ......I have uninstalled and reinstalled the old with the same results nada.....now I have contacted 8 times the chat support and they point me to someone else saying go there and do something what exactly I was supposed to do was unclear..... then they said good bye and disconnected the chat with no help at all just more confusion ..... nothing works .... can anyone tell me where to find a decent version of the prevoice cause everything I am trying doesnt work ....does anyone else out there have the dell inspiron e 1505 with the ati mobility radeon x1300 graphics card....and the windows xp pro ops system that can tell me what I need to do to get this to work???? Live chat support is no help at all just more confusion!!!!!! and yes I am pissed as the first post should reflect with at least a little angry humor

What exactly is not working mean? When you double click on the Second Life shortcut, exactly step by step what happens, and where does it fail.

What type of connection do you have to the internet? Does it plug directly into your PC, or is there a router between you and the internet connection?

I tought the last post explained it when logging into the newest version I am in a ruth avatar and I cannot move everyting is grey .....and nothing works......does anyone have a link to the old prevoice version that will work as those that I have found up to this point have seemingly ceased working...... and yes the first post was sarcastic and aimed at Linden and SL itself but I thought the second was in fact genuime and indicative of the efforts that I have gone to at this point to try and get some sort of resolution .......

I have a duel wireless and cable modum can disconnet the cat 5 from the router and still get on the net..... or I can connect the cat 5 to the back of the puter and log in that way..currently I use the cat 5 from the router/modum to the puter....I have a delll inspiron e 1505 with the ati mobility radeon x1300 graphics card.....and the windows xp pro ops system does anyone else out there have this system and what have you done to get your voice version to work

Okay, firstly, have you installed the most recent ATI graphics drivers? Those things are attached to everything IN SL, so you may want to go to ATI's website and download them. The newest was August 13.

It sounds like you have a wireless router there somewhere. Can you give the exact model names and numbers of the Cable Modem, and anything that is plugged into the cable modem?

yup the cable comes out of the wall and goes into a little grey box with a little plastic antenna on it....it is a netgear and it says on it wireless cable modum gateway cg814wg

i would definitely start with the below advice.
fwiw, not being able to move and everything being grey indicates network problems. i'd ignore the graphics drivers and start looking at my network if i were you.

Since you're wireless, I'd recommend setting everything as low as possible in Edit/Preferences.. and that means EVERYTHING.

Graphics: Draw Distance = 64
Graphics Detail: Shaders, Bumpmapping/Shiny, Ripple, Avatar Vertex all checked OFF
Avatar Render = Normal
Terrain Detail = Low
All four Mesh Details = Lowest Possible
Advanced Graphics: Fog Distance = 2.0
Max Particles = 0
Outfit Composite = 2
Network: Bandwidth = half of your realistic bandwidth (i.e. don't max this out)

Apply and save these preferences.
Log off, delete everything in the cache directory, and log back in. Let us know how that works.

You can edit those preferences without logging on, at the SL start up screen. Then quit and try relogging.

SL says definitively that they do not recommend wireless when connecting to SL. I however do it all the time. Nevertheless, that is a good place to start, connect directly to your cable modem and see if it makes a difference.

I ran wireless for 4 months, then moved straight to a direct ethernet line to my cable box. Made a BIG difference in speed and packet loss. If you do move to a direct line, Leather, if you can use an ethernet cord as opposed to a USB cord, do it.
