Help me find my nails

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but here goes:
I was dragging my nails from my inventory onto my hand, but I think I must have put them on the ground because I'm not wearing them and they're not in my inventory. I can't see them anywhere on the floor in my apartment - so where have they gone? And this might seem like a fuss to be making over nails, but they're one of the few things I've bought and they weren't cheap.
So I think what I'm asking is this: is there a way to see a list of the objects in the vicinity? I'd like to know if they're there and I just can't see them, or if they've disappeared completely. And if not, any other suggestions? Or do I have to just put this down to a silly mistake and save up for another set?

Try "Control Alt T" there is also a menu option that does the same thing. This will make all invisible objects glow red.

Also if it is on land you own go to "About land, objects, refresh list, then click your name" This should make the objects you own be outlined with white lines.

Are these prim fingernails? Most painted fingernails in SL are a glove clothing item - not something that can be dropped on the ground. Since the avatar's hand moves to a variety of semi-random positions, prim nails would NEVER stay on your fingertips reliably, as there are no attachment points other than "hand" or "wrist" to affix them to. so I doubt they are prims.

If they are a clothing item, they are still in inventory. Do a search for the name of the item. You may have dragged them to a nearby folder.

It is also possible, if they were a no-copy clothing item, that you may have dragged them to the contents of a prim. For example, if you were sitting on a prim bed, and dragged a no-copy item from your inventory, but missed the avatar on release, you might have instead dragged the item INTO the root prim of the object you released them over. Try editing objects in that area, and look at the contents of each object.

Thanks for the replies folks. I tried showing the invisible items, but can't see them. Also I don't own the land, I'm renting an apt so the about land thing didn't work. I've searched in my inventory, they're definitely not there, and there's no sign of them in any of the objects I have (in the contents folder).

BUT a very very generous person read my message and has donated me some money to replace them. I'm overwhelmed by the kindness - this is someone I've never spoken to before - and she also gave me some cute jeans :-). I'm really surprised and touched by the kindness this person has shown me. And I'll be right clicking and wearing stuff from now on, I've learnt my lesson.

I've been wondering how people get around this. I was making prim long nails when I realised the problem but various AVs have claws & I figured they must have the same problem.

The only solution I could guess at (and don't have the skills to try) is by restricting finger movement in custom anims. Would combining an AO with a co-ordinated script in the prim(s) be possible? Even if it is, it sounds exessively complex and way beyond my skills.

That doesn't stop designers from making prim fingernails anyway. I've seen them in several locations and have even tried different demos. And you're right: they don't stay on the fingertips.

I've worn the TaP prim nails since the day they were released (3 or 4 months ago now?) and I absolutely love them :).

There are some glitches, but I noticed (using a second puter) that they're for the most part just on my end for some odd reason, and most of the time they work perfect (some dances being the exception).

Noone ever commented on them being unsightly and personally the prim skirts glitches when you sit still bug me far more than my nails ever do :).

The furry avatars that I own and have seen have two types with claws. The normal type is a prim replacement for the hand. The hand is shrunk as small as it gets as part of the shape that comes with the avatar, and a prim paw, with claws, is attached to the hand. Usually the real avatar fingers remain inside the paw, unseen. And the fingers on the prim paw are not mobile.

The other option is on "Full Prim Avatars", like the Werewolf and Kitsune avatars from Jakkal's Werehouse. These shrink the avatar itself to almost skeletal in form, and replace the entire body, including the hands, with prim parts. The hands in that case are animated collections of prims, that move the fingers by scripted partial linkset prim movements, and the claws are part of the finger prims.

For my Human avatars that do painted fingernails, I love the glove and sock sets from Second Skin Labs. Great selection of colors, and they are as easy to use as any other clothing item.

I try to avoid situations like that (losing items, not with my nails) by not dragging the item to my avatar but just right click and click WEAR.
