I hope it's ok to talk about this issue here.
I just started my second life. "Zelf Chrome"

Thing is..
In South Africa we pay ZARand 2.00 for a Mb of data transfered (be it sent or received)
I just went onto the site for the first time and it cast me R20.00 for 3 minutes.
This means that even if I earned L$1000 an hour, I would still run a los.

How can I be a Second Lifer without paying more than I earn in real life?
Is there a way to minnimize the quality or details or something?
I've read about the mobile version.... Is there sutch a thing???

Mobile phones only use a fraction (10 times less data) to show on it's small screen.
Thus Cheaper for South Africans and faster speeds as well.
Note that it would have to be a Java aplication (I have a Nokia 6300)

Thank you.

short answer: get a different internet connection, one where you don't pay by the byte.

"real" secondlife eats up data like a small kiddo snarfs up mac&cheese.

internet on a cellphone? forget it. unless you get a cellphone that runs windows XP and has a nvidia card. I don't know of any phone with those specs.
SL as a java app? that'd reduce the whole thing to chat only, and that would be pointless.

Welcome to Second Life, Zelf. Because it's a dynamic world everything is streamed - making for constant downloading. Although there are a few things one can do (lower draw distance, stay in one area) there's nothing much you can do that won't drastically diminish SL itself. There are lightweight clients (almost nothing but chat) and an iPhone app.

In some parts of the world (for instance Australia) customers pay by amount of downloaded material - there isn't a choice.

If there are no ISPs in S.Africa that don't charge the earth, then I don't see any possibility of using Second Life for S.Africans - except rich ones.

You have my sympathy, Zelf - as an Australian, I can confirm that Osprey is dead right. While it doesn't sound as if our situation is as bad as yours, it still requires a fairly hefty monthly investment to be able to access SL for a decent length of time :(
