Hey all, I was just wondering if anyone has made Babbage's Difference Engine in SL.

I've never seen one. It would certainly be an interesting project, though, both from a building and a scripting perspective.

That said, there's not really a way to replicate the exact mechanics of the thing, if that's what you had in mind. Babbage's original had what, 25,000 parts in it? You'd need two dedicated sims for that many pieces in SL.

Very good idea. I did think about it, but I remember another even more beautiful machine, also in the London Science museum, which did Fourier analysis using rotating brass discs. So I though I would make that, but I can't find a picture of it. Can't do it from memory - it was too many years ago.

Hell of a project and I'm not up to that level of skill yet. I'd definately run a private server to make it, then find someone with $$ to host it :).

Building the Difference Engine would probably only be a "fake" display model, or, as has been pointed out, span several sims to even have prims enough, and be a ridiculously complicated project.
But the look and feel of the Difference Engine lends itself well to some steampunk aesthetics, and I am, in fact, toying with making a working *Turing Machine* with that look.

I've seen a few models from time to time, but of course none were fully functional.

That's not to say it can't be done, though!

Things like that - check out Maklin Deckard's shop in Port Caledon. Full set of mechanised steam infantry armour too.

Another one along those lines is Professor Sadovnycha, creator of the Core ship - which has since resurfaced and poised for another smashing, drilling good journey.

If you've ever wondered why steampunks wear such exotic eye protection, look at all the moving parts on the stuff these guys make - you'll be wearing it too!

There is a scaled down one made of legos http://acarol.woz.org/ At first glance, it looks daunting but doable. The scripting wouldn't be terribly difficult. The biggest challange would be getting enough prims to build it. Looks like a really cool project.
