I'm trying to decide if I still want my land in SL, or if I can have just as much fun being homeless. There are so many deserted clubs and public places now that I'm not sure I sill need my virtual doll house.

At one point, I had nearly an entire sim but now I'm down to a 1/4(still kinda big). I do admit I enjoy having a "home" and I like changing things around on my land. I have a really, really nice piece of land--and I can say that objectively. I have scoured all of SL and I have come to know the things people look for--this land has all of them. Protected waterfront, excellent land/water ratio(almost all of which can be either raised or lowered above or below the water level), white sand, and it all can be made perfectly flat if need be. If I sell it I wouldn't be able to find another piece like it easily -- at least until the LL land machine starts churning out 50 sims a day again. lol

It would be nice to have that money back in my bank account. I was wondering if there was anyone here who once owned land, sold it, and now have just as much fun without it. Would you still enjoy SL without your land?

Sounds like you have already decided. I would be tempted to tier down, cash-in and spend the money you save per month on a new wardrobe every so often (if shopping is something you like to do).

Quarter sim is still a lot-you might want to just tier down a little. You can have fun with less land, too. ;)

I used to have roughly 6000 m until I finally realized that I spent about 5% of my time there. Sold it many months ago and have been happily homeless ever since.

Can you rent it out for enough to make it worth holding on to?

Thanks everyone. :) I've thought about renting it all out to see if I get past my declining interest. The problem with that is I'm afraid the longer I wait the more likely LL is to do something to once again undermine the economy thus making my land worth less (or worthless, he he)

Playing on the land is a big reason I come onto SL. Of course I have many good friends too, but I would be on a lot less I think. hmmmm If it weren't so expensive and the monthly charges so high I would just hang on--but with so much money at stake I feel pressured. ah well.

I spent a lot on land during the last year in long run though I decided it just was to expensive for me and luckily I had friend who could afford the land so I gave her my land she pays the tier instead of donating it to me and we share.
It is worked out better this way for me but if in future she has problems with money I will chip in what I can.
Dealing with rentals just hasn't worked very well personally for me.
I suggest you have fun doing what you want, contribute what you can that won't hurt your rl pocket book.

So your shop is rented only?

i don't own or rent any land and I am quite happy homeless.
I am thinking about getting land, just as somewhere to put my stuff and for somewhere I can create an environment purely for me and change as I want. But i see that as an extra. I do not need land to enjoy second life, i am enjoying it already without it.

If you feel like you still want land I would try tiering down to reduce costs. 1/4 sim seems like a lot. Maybe you could even rent some of it to recover costs if that is viable for you.

But as I said, I have never had land so I cannot tell you what it is like to lose it, only that I enjoy SL without ever having land.

:)

You always want to have your own refuge. The reasons and needs far outweight being homeless. So you wil have money from the land being sold, how long do you think that will last?

Personally, I love having my own land. It's a mainland parcel, a 4608 and then I have a 1024 on another Sim with my small store on it. I like decorating, and change things frequently. In fact, I have quite a few houses in my inventory. I now use a skyhouse for my main living, but just bought a treehouse for my land. I recently moved my draw distance up to 512, just to actually see what was all around me, and for mainland, it's really not that bad. I do feel like I probably wouldn't play as much if I didn't have my own land, although the expense can sometimes be daunting. But then I remind myself that if my husband and I go to a movie, well, it costs almost more than my monthly membership and tier put together, especially if we want soda and popcorn. So, it's all in the entertainment budget. It give me someplace to fulfill my inner decorator (I wish I could redecorate my RL home as often!), someplace to put my stuff, someplace to create for my store, someplace to just get away and hang out if I want to. I've thought about selling it numerous times, but honestly, I don't think I would enjoy SL nearly as much without it.

I just went through this myself, I was running low on money before Christmas so I sold my land and have been homeless for a few weeks. It is fun it kind of forces you to go out and meet people instead of always hanging around the house. It sort of feels like you are new again having to survive on the streets! But forget about having any privacy to try on clothes or anything, my friends have offered to use their land and I do, but I don't like to impose on them this way.

Although I currently own a mainland sim, the most peaceful time in SL for me was when I sold everything and lived in a zen tea house on a 512 for three months.

I'm happy as a bug with my 4608m. Although I can certainly imagine doing lots of things with a 1/4 sim, there's plenty to do with my more modest (but still ample) parcel. Of course, it's my first piece of land so maybe the new hasn't worn off for me.

I own a piece of mainland since 2005 and I just could not part with it but I did not want to pay for it. I got a few friends to group-own it with me and donate tier. We share the place nicely (we actually have not seen each other in months).

I owned land for as long as it served my purpose to play and build, then sold it in favour of a different SL experience. I haven't regretted it once and am happily homeless. If I feel the need for a little patch to call my own, I rent for a week or so, and most of my building is done in a sandbox anyway.

Not everyone needs their own refuge, and being homeless, for some, far outweighs the burden and tie of ownership. The tendency to equate SL with RL, where being homeless would be much more of an issue, is quite beyond my comprehension - SL is the perfect opportunity to slough off RL norms.

Do what makes you happy :)
