I'll ask the obvious questions first:
Is your mic plugged in? (did you test the mic to make sure it's functioning?)
In your settings, do you have it set to "press to talk" or just "toggle on / off" for speaking?
Could you have inadvertantly re-set the button you use to speak, and not be using that button? (I've reset mine to "~"...and I sometimes forget that's the one...not the brightest bulb on the string, sometimes)

And then go to the audio bit on the control bar and make sure you didn't mute the mic from there too. That was the most annoying day I'd ever spent too.

Probably not, I've used SL voice on my icky little laptop that just has the cheapest audio chip on the planet. It was actually harder to set up on the PC that has an audio card, multiple mic inputs to choose from.

Two questions:
1. In SL's voice preferences, when you choose device settings and speak into your mike, do you see the volume bar respond to your voice? If not, then either you have chosen the wrong device for your mic in preferences, or something is wrong in your Windows device settings -- perhaps the mic volume is set too low there etc..

2. When debugging this, I would uncheck the preferences boxes for both the push-to-talk choices, which should leave your mic on all the time. That way you don't have to use SL's funky onscreen control, or your mouse button etc., to speak.

Possibly. I had a long list of things to set up when I did Voice.

1. Unmute the mic if the mic has the volume control on it. (My headset has it's own volume control. ) Obviously, this isn't the problem, because you can record your voice.

2. Get Windows to recognize sound input: You've obviously did this.

3. Run SL's idiotic Voice Wizard and find out that it sets everything to default.. but the default has nothing to do with your computer. This was my ticker. For some reason, the Voice wizard will select default.. but not your actual input device. I had to tell it that it wanted my SoundMax Digital Audio a few times before it finally 'stuck.' Even still, it will occasionally lose my settings.

4. Make sure you're in voice enabled lands. Yeah, this is the other catch.

If that doesn't work, I'm outta ideas.

Input device. I could hear fine too, but the input (speaking in SL) wasn't happening for me. Had to tell it what input device was driving the mic, so it would... tap into that. *shrugs* I don't understand it fully myself, but that's what worked for me.

Ooh, didn't think about that. And reading is not happening well right now. I'll go sit quietly for a bit. Forgive me, I've been up since 5 am, taking hubby to air port.

She can? I don't see that in her post. The volume control on my mic cord drove me insane until a friend reminded me ... forgot it existed ...

I'm just curious, I have an Integrated audio. If I were to want to try Voice, would that be a problem?

Shouldn't be. My tiny laptop has Analog Device's "integrated digital audio" Soundmax chip, soldered down on its (only) board -- anyway, it's purty small and dumb :)
