Were you playing with the debug settings at all, and viewer do you use?
I'm wondering if you're using something with RLV built in (most third-party viewers like Emerald have it). I can think of several ways to reproduce something very like the problem you describe if you are using RLV, but not so many if you're not.
If you're not using RLV, see what happens when you next log in. If the problem's still there, try tp-ing somewhere else and seeing if the problem persists. If it does, I think I would be inclined to uninstall SL completely and then re-install it, which should get rid of whatever setting you might have altered by accident to cause this.

Do you mean the line of chat that appears on the screen for a few seconds, then fades away? I'm not sure what you did to delete that...
But try this: click on the Communicate button at the bottom left of the screen. Also click the little local chat button next to it, and the Local Chat button that pops up when you do.
You should see the Communication window, with your Contacts tab, any IM tabs that are open, and a Local Chat tab.

From: Lindal Kidd Do you mean the line of chat that appears on the screen for a few seconds, then fades away? I'm not sure what you did to delete that.... Ah.. that might be it.. there's a setting in Edit ..Preferences..Text Chat, called "Chat Console:" with settings about Fade Chat after n (seconds) or # lines. Fiddling with that could, I guess, cause you only to see a little of what's being said. The default is, I think, 20 seconds or 40 lines (well, that's what mine's set at and I've never touched it). It wouldn't stop others seeing what you typed, of course, but the OP didn't seem sure if the other people could see what was being typed or not.
