Odd, Panic Provoking messages showing up all of a sudden...

At first, I thought someone was playing a joke on me, Or some asinine individual decided I pissed them off the wrong way and this was the lamest they could come up with to 'get me back' .... But....

Now this morning I wake up, talk to a few friends whom don't travel in the same circles I do mostly and seems this is getting sent to people at random with two known variations...

[2008/11/17 12:31] Linden Labs Alert System: Breech of TOS reported. Finish all current conversations as your account will be disabled in 5 minutes, and not be available for 72 hours. Thank you.

The above was to myself personally, the next was to someone else..

[19:53] Second Life: Your account is causing a severe server overload. Please relog immediately or your account will be disabled for 48 hours, and all inventory items will be lost. Thank you.

Now, this was sent to from what I have set as the object text color in main chat. So I know it's not legit. Because if it was, it would have been in the system text color, granted of which can be faked by someone with a hacked client, but like I said, it showed up in the object text color.

The reason why I posted it here, is because I was not the only one sent this, plus, those whom are not familiar with the differences might cause a panic, and overload LL with support chats, tickets, ect... of which I'm sure has been done heavily due to the issue over the OS changes.

So yeah, I am curious whom all else might have noticed the same message or something simular out of the blue.

I guess these messages were appearing in public chat.

They must be coming from a nearby prim which somebody with a sick sense of humor has scripted to say these things.

It must be against the TOS to impersonate LL. Note that the object must have renamed itself as"Linden Labs Alert System". If it happens again and you can find the object - AR the creator.

Were you all in the same parcel/area on the same sim? Or were you all in different sims when this happened? I'm just wondering if there's only one object on one parcel, or many objects sending these messages out.

I recall being on help Island some weeks back when a "noisy box" episode was going on.

The local chat was filling up very rapidly too with comments like "Metal Bookmite says this, that and the other" (racist and intolerant drivel).

Then the local chat would fill with someone else's name... then another etc.

I have no idea what it was, but I assumed it was the aforementioned noisy box.

Different SIM, and separate times.

Seen those two quite often, even made a few myself for sh*ts and giggles to mess with friends.

But this wasn't a repeat spam, it simply popped the message off once, and that was it.

I find the notion that LL would care to politely ask you to bid farewell to your pals before cutting you off somewhat amusing.

This sounds like something that'd really piss off the Lindens - they just have _no_ sense of humor when it comes to people pretending to be official.

If it's really coming in chat, not in IM, it's easy enough to do a script that will tell you who it's coming from. I can't get in-world for another 5-6 hours but I'm sure somebody would be able to fix you up with a script, if you need help..

I'm sure Linden Labs would not send out such a message unless it was spelt correctly ("breach" not "breech";)... unless it means your avatar is about to give birth to a TOS feet first? :p

When LL is logging you out, it doesn't show up in chat. You'll get a blue dropdown box or a popup.

AR the owner. There's no real way to tell if the alleged creator created the griefing tool or just the root prim that got modified into the griefing tool. Even if you found the creator of the script, you'd have the same potential problem.

I'm sure Linden Lab would not send out a message as Linden Labs ;)

If you have Mysti Tool, keep the Object ID option turned on. The next time an 'object' says something in local chat, it will tell you the object ID and one of these brilliant forum folks will be able to tell you how to get the object owner from that.

Additionally, if the 'object' that did this initially happens to still be located in the general area of where you received the message, you could find it via an object that scans for objects named certain ways (in this case, find an object named " Linden Labs Alert System" or "Second Life";).

I think if LL knows about this they can search for the object by name and catch the person as well as delete them all off the grid.

Did you tell them?
